Predictors of Brain Infarction in Pediatric Patients During Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation

open access: yesArtificial Organs, Volume 50, Issue 6, Page 909-916, June 2026.
In 179 pediatric ECMO patients, brain infarction (BI) occurred in 28% and was linked to markedly higher 30‐day mortality. VA ECMO mode (vs. VV) and higher pre‐ECMO arterial lactate independently predicted BI, supporting standardized neuro‐monitoring and liberal early brain CT, especially for children on VA ECMO.

Mitochondrial Transplantation as a New Therapeutic Approach Against Cardiac and Renal Consequences in Male Rats With Myocardial Infarction

open access: yesActa Physiologica, Volume 242, Issue 6, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Aim Myocardial infarction (MI) is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. MI is associated with cardiac structural and functional alterations. Among these, cardiac fibrosis may be significantly influenced by mitochondrial dysfunction. We sought to evaluate whether the injection of functional mitochondria from healthy muscle could improve

Successful use of haemoperfusion therapy in an adult horse with hepatic encephalopathy and cholangiohepatitis

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Education, Volume 38, Issue 6, Page e307-e314, June 2026.
Summary A 4‐year‐old, 520 kg, American Quarter Horse broodmare, approximately 90 days in foal, was presented to Texas A&M University Teaching Hospital for suspected liver disease. Based on clinicopathological values and hepatic abnormalities noted ultrasonographically, the mare was presumptively diagnosed with cholangiohepatitis.

The factor XIa antibody osocimab strongly inhibits clotting in extracorporeal circuits with human blood and in baboons

open access: yesResearch and Practice in Thrombosis and Haemostasis
Background: Effective anticoagulant approaches in extracorporeal circuits with little impact on hemostasis are still an unmet medical need. Targeted inhibition of activated factor (F)XI might represent an attractive alternative or addition to ...

Transfusion‐related alpha‐gal syndrome: Two new cases expanding the demographic and geographic spectrum, and evidence of a diagnostic gap in allergic transfusion reaction evaluation

open access: yesTransfusion, Volume 66, Issue 6, Page 1167-1179, June 2026.
Abstract Background Transfusion‐related alpha‐gal syndrome (TRAGS) has recently been proposed as a cause of allergic transfusion reactions (ATRs) in which alpha‐gal‐specific IgE in sensitized group O (or potentially group A) recipients reacts with epitopes on group B or AB plasma‐containing components.

Comparison of noradrenalin medication during cardio surgeries using extracorporeal circulation

open access: yes, 2008
The theme of this thesis is a comparison of two methods of medication a noradrenalin hormone during surgeries using extracorporeal circulation. Both of these methods - continuous and bolus medication are common used in praxis to regulate blood pressure ...

Phenotyping hemodynamic response to veno‐arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in cardiogenic shock

open access: yesPhysiological Reports, Volume 14, Issue 11, June 2026.
Abstract Simulation models suggest that veno‐arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA ECMO) uniformly results in left ventricular (LV) distension in cardiogenic shock (CS). This study characterized the hemodynamic response to VA ECMO in animal models of CS, and in patients with CS.
