Open Questions in Cosmic-Ray Research at Ultrahigh Energies

open access: yesFrontiers in Astronomy and Space Sciences, 2019
We review open questions and prospects for progress in ultrahigh-energy cosmic ray (UHECR) research, based on a series of discussions that took place during the “The High-Energy Universe: Gamma-Ray, Neutrino, and Cosmic-ray Astronomy” MIAPP workshop in ...

A Stratification in Magnetic Field Structures: The Radio Outflow in NGC 4151

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
The nature of radio outflows in radio-quiet (RQ) active galactic nuclei (AGN) remains poorly understood. In this study, we present kiloparsec-scale polarization observations of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151 using the Karl G.

ALPs searches with LST-1 [PDF]

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences
Axions and axion-like particles (ALPs) are hypothetical particles predicted by several extensions of the Standard Model and viable candidates for solving one of the big mysteries of the Universe: Dark Matter.

Extragalactic Magnetar Giant Flares: Population Implications, Rates, and Prospects for Gamma-Rays, Gravitational Waves, and Neutrinos

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Magnetar giant flares (MGFs) are the most energetic non-catastrophic transients known to originate from stellar objects. The first discovered events were nearby.

Very Light Extragalactic Jets with Magnetic Fields

open access: yes, 2008
We explore the global structure and evolution of powerful radio sources located in clusters of galaxies and their interaction with the ambient gas, in particular with respect to the effects of magnetic fields. Recent observations of inverse-Compton emission from their cocoons at X-ray energies indicate that magnetic fields are present on a considerable

What Rogue Hydrogen Clouds Tell Us about Galactic Magnetic Fields

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Observations of the Milky Way and external galaxies support the idea that large-scale magnetic fields are concentrated in galactic disks, with halo magnetic fields at least an order of magnitude weaker.

Conversion of TeV photons in realistic extragalactic magnetic field

open access: yes, 2018
Very High Energy (TeV) photons can evade absorption by conversion into axion-like (ALPs) particles in the extragalactic magnetic field (EMF). We show that using realistic simulations of the EMF we obtain an even stronger conversion than those obtained with the simplified cell model.

The Fallibility of Equipartition Magnetic Field Strengths from Synchrotron Emission Using Synthetically Observed Galaxies

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Understanding the role that magnetic fields play on the stage of galaxy formation requires accurate methods for inferring the properties of extragalactic magnetic fields.
