Factor V deficiency and menstruation: A gynecologic challenge

Menorrhagia is a well-known complication of factor V deficiency.A 13-year-old girl with factor V deficiency presented with acute hemorrhage on day 4 of menses. Laboratory assessment revealed a hemoglobin of 36 g/L. The ultrasound appearance of a large loculated cystic mass was consistent with substantial intraperitoneal bleeding.

Summary We report two cases of factor V deficiency. A 12‐year‐old girl with thalassemia major was admitted for bone marrow transplant (mismatched). She was found to have a heterozygous deficiency of factor V (21%), but this was considered compatible with the transplant, which was performed without the support of suppernatant cryoprecipitate.

SUMMARY A 9-year-old spayed female Beagle was found to have thrombocytopenia, coagulation-factor V deficiency, and adenocarcinoma originating from nasal epithelium. The deficiency of factors concerned with normal hemostasia was believed to be associated with chronic intravascular coagulation similar to the consumption coagulopathy syndrome of man.
