Failure analyses and wear mechanisms of rock drill rods, a case study

open access: yes, 2019
Rock drill rod failure is a big concern for the mining industry. The tough conditions required to break down rock material into small pieces subject rock drill components to high mechanical stresses and corrosion that lead to the failure of the drill ...

Deformation and failure mechanisms of electrochemically lithiated silicon thin films [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
A fundamental understanding of mechanical behavior of a Li–Si system is necessary to address the poor mechanical integrity of amorphous silicon (a-Si) electrodes, in order to utilize their enormous capacity in Li-ion batteries.

Assessment of Shear Strength and Failure Mechanisms in Exterior Reinforced Concrete Beam–Column Joints Using Machine Learning and Explainable Artificial Intelligence

open access: yesBuildings
The seismic performance of reinforced concrete (RC) beam–column joints depends on both shear strength and failure mechanisms, the assessment of which remains challenging because of complex interactions among geometric, material, loading, and ...

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

Failure mechanisms of a SiC particles 2024Al composite under dynamic loading [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
Dynamic mechanical response of a 20 vol% silicon carbide particles (SiCp) reinforced 2024 Al composite prepared by powder metallurgy techniques were studied with a split Hopkinson bar.

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

Failure mechanisms of 2D silicon film anodes: in situ observations and simulations on crack evolution

open access: yes, 2018
An in situ optical system was used to observe the failure processes of two-dimensional silicon film anodes, suggesting a new debonding mode based on crack crushing. The stress evolution upon lithiation was quantitatively analyzed via fully coupled finite

Failure Mechanisms and Local Scour at Coastal Structures induced by Tsunamis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
On March 11 2011, an exceptionally large tsunami event was triggered by a massive earthquake offshore, the northeast coast of Japan, which affected coastal infrastructure such as seawalls, coastal dikes and breakwaters in the Tohoku region.

Microbiome−host proteostasis crosstalk—An emerging perspective on mechanisms and interventions toward healthy longevity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.

Electronics packaging materials and component-level degradation monitoring

open access: yesFrontiers in Electronics
Electronic components are complex systems consisting of a combination of different materials, which undergo degenerative changes over time following the second law of thermodynamics.
