Stress-corrosion failure mechanisms in soda-lime silica glass

open access: yes
The present work focuses on stress-corrosion mechanisms in soda-lime silica glass. Four-point beam-bending tests were performed on small specimens, measuring failure time in function of temperature and relative humidity.

Deterioration mechanisms in dragline wire ropes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Failures in hoist and drag ropes are studied and described based on site inspections on Marion and BE draglines. Causes of the failures are discussed. Some of the analyses of the wire rope failures centres on the wire rope accessories through which these

Liver organoids: modelling complexity in homeostasis and disease

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Studying liver in vitro has been challenging because simple 2D cell cultures fail to capture liver's cellular and architectural complexity. To bridge this gap, scientists increasingly use organoids, 3D liver models which better mimic liver composition and function. This review examines recent advances in liver organoid complexity and realism, discusses

Epigenetic reprogramming of lineage switching in cancer

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cancer cells rarely commit to a single identity. Epigenetic mechanisms and tumor microenvironment cues push epithelial cells toward flexible, hybrid states that can shift into mesenchymal, neuroendocrine, or stem‐like fates, driving metastasis, drug resistance, and tumor heterogeneity. Targeting the epigenetic regulators behind these transitions, using

Validation of low velocity impact modelling on different stacking sequences of CFRP laminates and influence of fibre failure [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
This paper presents a validation of low-velocity impact Finite Element (FE) modelling. Based on switching ply location of reference layup [02,452,902,-452]s T700GC/M21 laminated plates from Bouvet et al.

Multi-scale fatigue failure analysis and deformation-cracking-strengthening mechanisms of LPBF TiC/ Ti6Al4V composites at service temperature

open access: yes
Additive manufacturing of nanoparticle-reinforced metal matrix composites has emerged as a key load-bearing structural material for hot-section components in aerospace engines. However, the mechanisms involving high-temperature performance, reinforcement

Autophagy and mitophagy in pancreatic β‐cell homeostasis and their involvement in diabetes pathophysiology

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This review focuses on the role of autophagy and mitophagy in maintaining pancreatic β‐cell function and homeostasis. We discuss how genetic defects affecting these pathways contribute to the development of type 1, type 2, monogenic, and gestational diabetes. We further explore their potential as therapeutic targets. Created in BioRender.

Can the failure speak? Militant failure in the academy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Academia is rife with structural issues. We are witnessing a mental health crisis among staff and students, hiring and employment practices are institutionally sexist and racist, and staff are increasingly expected to be a triple threat (research ...

Corrosion behavior and failure mechanism of electroless nickel immersion gold processing circuit boards in NaHSO3 electrolyte solution

open access: yes工程科学学报, 2015
Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used to study the corrosion behavior of electroless nickel immersion gold processing printed circuit boards (PCB-ENIG) in a simulated electrolyte solution (0.1 mol.

Golgi enzymes are retrieved from the plasma membrane to the trans‐Golgi network

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Golgi enzymes are traditionally considered resident proteins retained within the Golgi apparatus. Here, we demonstrate that a subset transiently reaches the cell surface and is subsequently retrieved to the trans‐Golgi network via retrograde transport. Using a nanobody‐based toolkit, we uncover a dynamic trafficking cycle of several Golgi enzymes.
