The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Right or duty? Is presence at trial a right or a duty in international criminal law? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
International criminal law has long recognised the right of the accused to be present at trial as part of his or her right to a fair trial. However, modern international criminal courts and tribunals have recently found that the accused also has a duty ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Awaiting a Fair Trial

open access: yesSouth African Crime Quarterly, 2023
Between 1995 and 2003, a number of legislative reforms made it more difficult for accused persons in South Africa to be released on bail. As a result, roughly one-third of South Africa’s total prison population is comprised of those held in remand detention.

Artificial Intelligence and Fair Trial Rights

open access: yes, 2023
Abstract The right to a fair trial is the most frequently violated human right before international human rights bodies, and it is more the rule than the exception that national judicial systems are overburdened and overly slow. This chapter asks whether artificial intelligence (AI) machine learning (ML) applications can help alleviate ...

Foster v. Chatman: Clarifying the Batson Test for Discriminatory Peremptory Strikes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Historically, peremptory challenges were thought necessary to ensure fair and impartial juries, but the tactic has also been widely used by prosecutors for racially discriminatory purposes.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

THE CONCEPT „INDEPENDENT AND IMPRATIAL TRIBUNAL” IN THE PRACTICE OF THE EUROPEAN COURT OF HUMAN RIGHTS

open access: yesPravo, 2012
One of important principle every democratic state is rule of law. The rule of law in countries of democratic tradition, so-called countries of western democracy, is not questioned any more.
