What kinds of work do Japanese primary care physicians who derive greater positive meaning from work engage in? A cross‐sectional study

open access: yesJournal of General and Family Medicine, 2023
Background Despite the increasing need for primary care physicians (PCPs) around the world, few physicians choose it as a career. PCPs who can find meaning and enjoyment in their work can be role models for medical students and professionals, which may ...

Family medicine in Japan [PDF]

open access: yesBritish Journal of General Practice, 2009
If you are passionate about primary care then it is always uplifting to meet people who feel the same. The argument for a structured primary care system in Japan has been ongoing for some time but it is only in the last few years that it is gathering momentum. Indeed, from a distance one might wonder why on earth Japan needs to change anything?

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

THE "FAMILY" OF FAMILY MEDICINE [PDF]

open access: yesThe Annals of Family Medicine, 2013
Most of us joined the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) as active members upon graduation from our residency training programs. During our careers, our memberships in other family medicine organization have likely evolved. However, the alphabet soup of abbreviations of our varied family medicine organizations can be a bit confusing and the ...

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

The ubiquitin ligase RNF115 is required for the clearance of damaged lysosomes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Upon lysosomal rupture, an E3 ubiquitin ligase RNF115 translocates from the cytosol to the damaged lysosomal membrane. Moreover, RNF115 depletion impairs the clearance of damaged lysosomes, identifying it as a key regulator of lysosomal quality control.
