Food consumption and gastric emptying of Farfantepenaeus paulensis
Abstract The effect of Farfantepenaeus paulensis body weight (BW) on food consumption (FC) and gastric emptying (GE) was determined for four shrimp size classes (SC) under laboratory conditions: SC 1 = 1.36 ± 0.43 g (mean wet BW ± S.D.); SC 2 = 2.99 ± 0.47 g; SC 3 = 5.55 ± 0.52 g and SC 4 = 7.23 ± 0.50 g. The present study evaluated spermatozoal capacitation in Farfantepenaeus paulensis. This process has direct applications in aquaculture, and it consists of the ionic, biochemical and morphological changes during the period that the spermatophore is stored or adhered to the thelycum. These changes make the spermatozoa capable of fertilization.
