Extracting the Behaviorally Relevant Stimulus: Unique Neural Representation of Farnesol, a Component of the Recruitment Pheromone of Bombus terrestris.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
To trigger innate behavior, sensory neural networks are pre-tuned to extract biologically relevant stimuli. Many male-female or insect-plant interactions depend on this phenomenon.

Quorum sensing in Candida albicans: probing farnesol's mode of action with 40 natural and synthetic farnesol analogs.

open access: yesChemistry & biology, 2004
The dimorphic fungus Candida albicans produces extracellular farnesol (3,7,11-trimethyl-2,6,10-dodecatriene-1-ol) which acts as a quorum-sensing molecule (QSM) to suppress filamentation. Of four possible geometric isomers of farnesol, only the E,E isomer possesses QSM activity.

Farnesol, a Fungal Quorum-Sensing Molecule Triggers Apoptosis in Human Oral Squamous Carcinoma Cells

open access: yesNeoplasia: An International Journal for Oncology Research, 2008
Farnesol is a catabolite within the isoprenoid/cholesterol pathway that has exhibited significant antitumor activity. Farnesol was recently identified as a quorum-sensing molecule produced by the fungal pathogen Candida albicans.

Farnesol repurposing for prevention and treatment of Acinetobacter baumannii biofilms

open access: yesBiofilm
Acinetobacter baumannii has emerged as a multidrug-resistant (MDR) superbug by causing severe infections, with high mortality rates. The ability of A. baumannii to form biofilms significantly contributes to its persistence in diverse environmental and ...
