Overview of FASD: How Our Understanding of FASD Has Progressed

Some historical clues suggest an ancient understanding that alcohol should be avoided during pregnancy, but these may have been overstated. Further evidence appears during times of widespread alcohol use in the middle ages, but the current understanding of prenatal alcohol exposure and FASD has its source in the latter half of the 20th century.
