The fatigue threshold, surface condition and fatigue limit of steel wire☆

International Journal of Fatigue, 1985
Abstract To test the hypothesis that fatigue cracks in drawn, pearlitic steel wire propagate from pre-existing surface defects which can be treated as cracks, the fatigue limits of five different wires have been statistically determined. The fatigue thresholds were measured using a new AC potential drop method and the initial defect depths then ...

Influence of Stresses below the Fatigue Limit on Fatigue Life

Solid State Phenomena, 2014
According to the performed analysis of fatigue phenomena occurring in metals, the effects of fatigue appear in the form of lines and slip bands under loading conditions producing variable stresses with values below the fatigue limit of these metals.

Fatigue limit at operational load

1995
General formula for the fatigue limit detemination of the parts is derived in this paper. The special formula is given for determining the fatigue limit of the steady prestressed parts subjected to the variable amplitude stress spectrum.

Statistical aspects of fatigue life and endurance limit

Fatigue & Fracture of Engineering Materials & Structures, 2010
ABSTRACTBased on the assumption that the fatigue life and endurance limit is mainly controlled by the materials particle distribution, different possible statistical distributions to describe the fatigue have been assessed. Some distributions lead to high statistical uncertainty or physically non‐realistic size effects. It is shown that, if the maximum

Hooke's law and fatigue limits in micromechanics

European Journal of Physics, 2001
Scanning tunnelling microscopes can be used to detect transitions between reversible and irreversible deformations of materials. Since the occurrence of stress-strain hysteresis is a necessary condition for the generation of material defects, and the cumulation of defects is, in turn, the underlying cause of fatigue failure, the observation of non ...

Limits to the applicability of LEFM in notch fatigue

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1984
Abstract A comparison is made between elastic-plastic, and linear-elastic, fracture mechanics parameters, for notch fatigue problems. It is shown that in high-strength aluminium alloy 2024-T351, at normal working stress levels, the errors involved in using LEFM for any crack detectable during non-destructive testing, is likely to be small.

Multiaxial Fatigue Limit Criterion of Metals

1999
In the present article attention is focused on the problem of the fatigue limit criterion, which is the extension of the usual concept of the uniaxial fatigue limit under multiaxial stress conditions. The intensity of the cyclic loads at the fatigue limit level is usually low such that the behaviour of the component remains apparently elastic at the ...
