Digital twins to accelerate target identification and drug development for immune‐mediated disorders

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Digital twins integrate patient‐derived molecular and clinical data into personalised computational models that simulate disease mechanisms. They enable rapid identification and validation of therapeutic targets, prediction of drug responses, and prioritisation of candidate interventions.

Presaturated iron‐core fault current limiters for MVDC power system applications

open access: yesIET Electric Power Applications
This paper presents design and dynamic performance investigation of a 25kV full‐scale, modular topology (arranged on the sides of a regular hexagon), medium voltage direct current (MVDC) permanent magnet (PM) biased presaturated fault current limiter ...

Rapid screening of staphylokinase protein variants using an unpurified cell‐free expression system

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
An unpurified cell‐free protein synthesis (CFPS) platform enables rapid functional screening of staphylokinase variants. Direct plasminogen‐activation assays performed in microplate format provide real‐time activity readouts, allowing rapid identification and ranking of variants with improved or reduced fibrinolytic activity without protein ...

A heuristic decomposition algorithm to optimally configure superconducting fault current limiters in Large-Scale power systems

open access: yesInternational Journal of Electrical Power & Energy Systems
With the continuously expanding installed capacity of the power system, the ever-increasing short-circuit current hinders its secure operation and further development.

Systemic dysregulation of apolipoproteins in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis serum

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease that damages motor neurons. This study found that people with ALS show significant changes in blood fats and the proteins that carry them. Several apolipoproteins were higher, lipid balances were altered, and normal protein–lipid relationships were disrupted.

The skills required for transition to university and study in biological sciences: A student perspective

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Bioscience students were asked for their opinions on the value and teaching of skills. 204 responded that teamwork, time management and study skills are necessary to reach University, that scientific writing, research, laboratory and presentation skills are taught effectively during their studies, while other skills are gained inherently through study ...

Enhancing Instantaneous Overcurrent Protection Selectivity in Power Lines Using Resistive Superconducting Fault Current Limiters

open access: yesIEEE Access
Traditional instantaneous overcurrent protection schemes encounter significant challenges in power lines, particularly when line impedances are low, resulting in minimal differences in fault current magnitudes for faults occurring at various segments in ...

Intercompartmental communication in senescence

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Senescent cells experience structural changes in the plasma membrane, endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, lysosomes, nucleus, and cytoskeleton. These alterations disrupt crosstalk among cellular compartments, impairing vesicular trafficking, contact sites, and molecular flow.

Identifying gene expression signatures for risk stratification of postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy in colorectal cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
A novel signature integrating genome‐wide analysis with clinical factors predicts recurrence in stage II colorectal cancer and enables a new risk stratification to guide postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy. Clinical risk stratification for postoperative recurrence in patients with pathological stage II (pStage II) colorectal cancer (CRC) is essential ...

Roebel cables from REBCO coated conductors: a one-century-old concept for the superconductivity of the future

open access: yes, 2016
Energy applications employing high-temperature superconductors (HTS), such as motors/generators, transformers, transmission lines and fault current limiters, are usually operated in the alternate current (AC) regime.
