Late Devonian-Carboniferous tectonic evolution within the Firth of Forth, Midland Valley : as revealed from 2D seisimic reflection data [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Results of integrated seismic mapping, within the Firth of Forth in the offshore Midland Valley of Scotland, are presented and illustrate aspects of the subsurface structure and tectonic evolution of the Upper Devonian to Carboniferous succession ...

The role of fluid pressure in induced vs. triggered seismicity. Insights from rock deformation experiments on carbonates [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Fluid overpressure is one of the primary mechanisms for tectonic fault slip, because fluids lubricate the fault and fluid pressure reduces the effective normal stress that holds the fault in place.

Loading Mode Dependence of Twin‐Twin Boundary Formation in a Textured Magnesium Alloy

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
The structures of twin‐twin boundaries formed by interactions between twin variants sharing the same or different zone axes in a deformed magnesium alloy are demonstrated. Lattice distortion around complicated interfaces promotes grain refinement in the subsequent thermomechanical process, enhancing the mechanical performance of magnesium alloys ...

Fault slip in multiphase magmas

open access: yes, 2023
During volcanic eruptions, changes in explosivity may be attributed to the rheological response of the magma. The tendency for magmatic suspensions to localise strain ensures that magmas can shift from a regime controlled by viscous flow to that where they can fracture and fragment, owing to increasing viscosity of the degassing, crystallising magma ...

The structure and composition of exhumed faults, and their implications for seismic processes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
Field studies of faults exhumed from seismogenic depths provide useful data to constrain seismologic models of fault zone processes and properties. Data collected on the San Andreas Fault in the San Gabriel Mountains has shown that large-displacement ...

Earthquakes and slip rate of the southern Sagaing fault: insights from an offset ancient fort wall, lower Burma (Myanmar) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Field investigations of an ancient fortress wall in southern Myanmar reveal an offset of ~6 m across the Sagaing fault, the major right-lateral fault between the Sunda and Burma plates.

Untethered Magnetic Microswimmers for Targeted Particle Transport and Flow Manipulation

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
This work introduces magnetically actuated microswimmers to dynamically reconfigure fluid flow within a single microfluidic device. Multiple homogeneous microswimmers are independently controlled by an external magnetic field to perform translational and rotational motions, thereby inducing real‐time flow manipulation.

Fast and Slow Slip Events Emerge Due to Fault Geometrical Complexity

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2018
Active faults release elastic strain energy via a whole continuum of modes of slip, ranging from devastating earthquakes to slow slip events (SSEs) and persistent creep.
