The vertical motions of mono-abundance sub-populations in the Milky Way disk

open access: yes, 2012
We present the vertical kinematics of stars in the Milky Way's stellar disk inferred from SDSS/SEGUE G-dwarf data, deriving the vertical velocity dispersion, \sigma_z, as a function of vertical height |z| and Galactocentric radius R for a set of 'mono ...

Lactoferrin treatment activates acetylcholinesterase, decreasing acetylcholine levels in non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cell culture supernatants, inhibiting cell survival

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Representation of the suggested mode of action of lactoferrin (Lf) in nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC) A549 cells. Lf induces activation of caspase‐3 by activating p53 and AChE leading to decreased ACh concentrations. In turn, ACh signaling leads to activation of VEGF and AKT and blocking of caspase‐3.

Dietary nitrate and nitrite protect against doxorubicin‐induced cardiac fibrosis and oxidative protein damage in tumor‐bearing mice

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Chemotherapies such as doxorubicin can have toxic effects on healthy cardiovascular/heart tissue. Following up on a doxorubicin toxicity study in mice without tumors where nitrate water was cardioprotective (lessened toxicity), this study with tumor‐bearing mice undergoing doxorubicin treatment showed no negative effect of nitrate and nitrite on drug ...

Abiotic stress growth conditions induce different responses in kernel iron concentration across genotypically distinct maize inbred varieties

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2013
The improvement of grain nutrient profiles for essential minerals and vitamins through breeding strategies is a target important for agricultural regions where nutrient poor crops like maize contribute a large proportion of the daily caloric intake ...

Sperimagnetism in Fe(78)Er(5)B(17) and Fe(64)Er(19)B(17) metallic glasses: II. Collinear components and ferrimagnetic compensation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Magnetization measurements on an Fe(64)Er(19)B(17) glass and polarized-beam neutron scattering measurements on Fe(78)Er(5)B(17) and Fe(64)Er(19)B(17) were described in part I. The finite spin-flip neutron scattering cross sections were calculated using a

Antibiofilm activity of a chionodracine‐derived peptide by NMR‐based metabolomics of cell‐free supernatant of Acinetobacter baumannii clinical strains

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
KHS‐Cnd peptide is able to impair biofilm formation and disaggregate mature biofilms in Acinetobacter baumannii clinical isolates. Differences in extracellular metabolites reflect changes in biofilm metabolism due to KHS‐Cnd treatment. Among the differentially represented extracellular metabolites upon KHS‐Cnd treatment, the significantly altered ...

Karakteristik Sedimen dan Kandungan Mineral Pasir Besi di Labuhan Haji Timur, Kabupaten Aceh Selatan

open access: yesJurnal Rekayasa Kimia & Lingkungan, 2018

Numerical analysis of high-strength reinforcing steel with conventional strength in reinforced concrete beams under monotonic loading

open access: yesOpen Engineering, 2022
This work presents finite element (FE) modeling using the ABAQUS program to investigate the effect of steel reinforcement with three different types of high-strength steels, grades 420, A1035, and SD685 on the flexural behavior of RC beams under ...

Electronic structure and magnetism of the diluted magnetic semiconductor Fe-doped ZnO nano-particles

open access: yes, 2009
We have studied the electronic structure of Zn$_{0.9}$Fe$_{0.1}$O nano-particles, which have been reported to show ferromagnetism at room temperature, by x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), resonant photoemission spectroscopy (RPES), x-ray absorption

Polarization‐resolved femtosecond Vis/IR spectroscopy tailored for resolving weak signals in biological samples using minimal sample volume

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Unique biological samples, such as site‐specific mutant proteins, are available only in limited quantities. Here, we present a polarization‐resolved transient infrared spectroscopy setup with referencing to improve signal‐to‐noise tailored towards tracing small signals. We provide an overview of characterizing the excitation conditions for polarization‐
