Usefulness of calcaneal quantitative ultrasound stiffness for the evaluation of bone health in HIV-1-infected subjects: Comparison with dual X-ray absorptiometry [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Objectives: With the development of effective treatments and the resulting increase in life expectancy, bone mineral density (BMD) alteration has emerged as an important comorbidity in human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1)-infected individuals. The

TPMS‐Gyroid Scaffold‐Mediated Up‐Regulation of ITGB1 for Enhanced Cell Adhesion and Immune‐Modulatory Osteogenesis

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
A) SLM generates biomimetic bone scaffolds with consistent porosity but varying TPMS‐Gyroid unit cell designs (TG15, TG20, TG25, TG30). B) By enhancing the expression of ITGB1, TPMS‐Gyroid scaffolds can facilitate osteogenic differentiation in BMSCs and promote M2 polarization in macrophages.

Bilateral Traumatic Fracture of Neck of Femur in a Child: A Case Report [PDF]

open access: yesMalaysian Orthopaedic Journal, 2013
Bilateral femoral neck fractures are rare in the pediatric age group, and only a few cases have been reported following major trauma in children. A 9-year old girl presented with bilateral femoral neck fractures following a motor vehicle accident.

Impact of generic alendronate cost on the cost-effectiveness of osteoporosis screening and treatment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Introduction: Since alendronate became available in generic form in the Unites States in 2008, its price has been decreasing. The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of alendronate cost on the cost-effectiveness of osteoporosis ...

Implementing BMP‐7 Chemically Modified RNA for Bone Regeneration with 3D Printable Hyaluronic Acid‐Collagen Granular Gels

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This study developed 3D‐printable THA‐Col microgels for delivering BMP‐7 cmRNA. The key result is that hMSCs transfected on the biomaterials showed BMP‐7 secretion levels comparable to pre‐transfected hMSCs, therefore introducing a cmRNA‐activated matrix to promote bone healing.

Bone mineral density in Iranian patients: Effects of age, sex, and body mass index [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Introduction: Osteoporosis is a multifactorial skeletal disease that is characterized by reduced bone mineral density (BMD). BMD values de-pend on several factors such as age, sex and age at menopause.

Immunosuppressive Formulations for Immunological Defense against Traumatic Brain Injury

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
A novel subcutaneous formulation combining alpha‐ketoglutarate, glycolysis inhibitor PFK15, and a myelin peptide reduces inflammation in a mouse TBI model. This formulation promotes regulatory immune cells, enhances autophagy, and improves motor function, suggesting its potential as a prophylactic immunosuppressive therapy to mitigate TBI‐induced ...

Increased risk of intraoperative and early postoperative periprosthetic femoral fracture with uncemented stems: 7,169 total hip arthroplasties from 8 Danish centers

open access: yesActa Orthopaedica, 2017
Background and purpose — The use of uncemented fixation in total hip arthroplasty (THA) is increasing. Registry studies have indicated an increased risk of revision of uncemented implants due to early periprosthetic femoral fracture.

Bisphosphonate-related bilateral atypical femoral fractures : be aware and beware [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Although bisphosphonates have a well established therapeutic role in the prevention of osteoporosis-related fractures, several reports published over the past 5-6 years suggest a possible causative relationship between long-term use of bisphosphonates ...

Dysfunctional stem and progenitor cells impair fracture healing with age [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Successful fracture healing requires the simultaneous regeneration of both the bone and vasculature; mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are directed to replace the bone tissue, while endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) form the new vasculature that supplies ...
