Acute Sleep Deprivation Shifts Substrate Utilization Toward Greater Fat Oxidation During Incremental Exercise in Recreationally Trained Adults

open access: yesScandinavian Journal of Medicine &Science in Sports, Volume 36, Issue 6, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Sleep deprivation alters metabolic homeostasis and substrate metabolism, but its effect on fat and carbohydrate utilization during exercise is unclear. This study examined the effects of one night of total and partial sleep deprivation on substrate utilization during a maximal fat oxidation test (MFO) in recreationally trained adults.

Improving Oxygen Barrier Performance of Polylactide Film by Using Bleached and Unbleached Nanocellulose From Grape Pomace

open access: yesJournal of Applied Polymer Science, Volume 143, Issue 14, April 10, 2026.
Bleached and unbleached nanocelluloses were produced from the exhausted grape pomace and applied as coatings on PLA substrates for sustainable food packaging. Unbleached nanocelluloses were more hydrophobic and amorphous than bleached ones. The resulting bio‐based bleached nanocellulose‐coated PLA films showed a 68% reduction in O2 permeability ...

Nutrient inversion but not warming drive changes in periphyton biomass and composition in shallow lake mesocosms

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, Volume 70, Issue S2, Page S140-S154, December 2025.
Abstract Periphyton plays an important functional role in shallow lakes and is sensitive to variation in nutrient availability and global warming. Understanding the responses of periphyton to changes in nutrient availability in contrasting warming scenarios can contribute to the development of more efficient techniques for the restoration of lakes in a
