So far, I have concentrated on how optical fibers are used for communications. However, fiber optics also have other important uses. This chapter will show how fibers are used as sensors. Fiber sensors work in a variety of ways, sometimes just using fibers to deliver light, other times monitoring changes induced in light transmission caused by external

A fiber optic curvature sensor based on discrete Fiber Bragg gratings inscribed in a multi-core fiber is presented. The individual cores of the multi-core fiber are each interrogated by a custom-built spectrometer running at up to 20 kHz. They are interfaced with a custom-tapered combiner of single-core fibers fusion spliced to the multi-core fiber ...

We describe a low-cost fiber optic sensor for measuring photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) in turbulent flow. Existing technology was combined in a novel way for probe development addressing the need for a small but durable instrument for use in flowing water. Optical components including fiber optics and a wide-spectrum light detector were used

The investigation results on phase optical sensors are presented. Phaseacoustic sensitivity of two- and three-layered (w-type) fibers with various polimeric jackets as well as without any coatings has been measured. To provide a rapid and reliable measurement of the phaseacoustic sensitivity of fibers it is suggested that a wideband acoustic noise ...

Fiber-optic microbend sensor structure
Optics Letters, 1997We proposed and experimentally investigated a novel microbend sensor structure. The structure is composed of single-mode leads and multimode sensing fiber. The proposed structure exhibited a level of sensitivity as much as six times higher than that of the classical microbend sensor configuration when the same sensing fiber was used.
