Proteasomal degradation of intracellularly expressed Amblyomin‐X limits suicide gene therapy potential in melanoma cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This study explores the feasibility of expressing the antitumoral protein Amblyomin‐X through a suicide gene therapy approach and investigates its intracellular fate after gene delivery. Although the gene is efficiently expressed, melanoma cells rapidly degrade the Amblyomin‐X protein via proteasome activity.

Regulation of human fibroblast insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-binding proteins by IGF-1 and cytokines, mechanisms of action and effects upon IGF bioactivity

open access: yes, 1995
PhDThe insulin-like growth factors, IGF-I and IGF-II, are ubiquitous polypeptide molecules that have mitogenic and metabolic actions in a wide variety of cell types, and consequently play a major role in mammalian growth and development.

Combined 5‐aminolevulinic acid and ferric ammonium citrate treatment promotes hair follicle growth by activating dermal papilla cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
5‐Aminolevulinic acid combined with ferric ammonium citrate (5‐ALA/FAC) stimulates dermal papilla cell activity and promotes hair follicle growth. The treatment enhances ERK and AKT signaling, increases hair‐inductive gene expression, and restores dermal papilla function suppressed by dihydrotestosterone and oxidative stress, resulting in enhanced hair

Cultured meat production—Scale and quality

open access: yesCell Reports Sustainability
Reducing cost of growth factors in fetal bovine serum free cell culture media is critical for cultivated meat production. In this issue, Stout et al. demonstrate how to overexpress the growth factors fibroblast growth factor 2 and its amplifier RasG12V ...

Release and Subcellular Localization of Acidic Fibroblast Growth Factor Expressed to High Levels in HeLa Cells

open access: yes, 1993
Acidic fibroblast growth factor (aFGF) lacks a classical signal sequence for secretion via the exocytic pathway but yet has to be released from cells in order to interact with high affinity receptors on the cell surface.

Seprase: An overview of an important matrix serine protease [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Seprase or Fibroblast Activation Protein (FAP) is an integral membrane serine peptidase, which has been shown to have gelatinase activity. Seprase has a dual function in tumour progression.

Basic and acidic fibroblast growth factors interact with the same cell surface receptors.

open access: yesJournal of Biological Chemistry, 1986
Despite quantitative differences, the activity of basic and acidic fibroblast growth factors (FGF) on a wide variety of normal diploid cells derived from neuroectoderm and mesoderm is intrinsically similar.

Suppression of lung adenocarcinoma migration through organelle alkalization by human lactoferrin – albumin fusion

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This paper reveals how human lactoferrin–albumin fusion (hLF‐HSA) potently suppresses lung adenocarcinoma cell migration. hLF‐HSA upregulates NHE7, leading to Golgi alkalization, disruption of the Golgi secretome, downregulation of MMP1, and reversal of EMT. These findings suggest a novel Golgi‐targeting strategy to suppress cancer cell migration.

The role of bone-derived factors in bone and muscle communication

open access: yesFrontiers in Endocrinology
The interaction between bone and muscle was traditionally considered to be mechanical. However, recent insights into the endocrine functions of these two tissues have led to an emerging concept that bone-muscle biochemical crosstalk occurs through ...
