Plasma pressure and the field-aligned currents in the magnetosphere

Advances in Space Research, 2004
Abstract Physical principles of formation of field-aligned currents in the magnetosphere were formulated at first more 30 years ago. These principles are based on suggestion that magnetospheric convection is conditioned by the electric field of the solar wind penetrating into the magnetosphere.

Field-Aligned (Birkeland) Currents

Space Science Reviews, 1985
Following earlier suggestions of Edmond Halley and Anders Celsius for the “magnetic behavior” of auroral phenomena, Kristian Birkeland discovered in his polar expeditions of 1902–03 that large-scale electric currents were associated with the aurora. He was also the first to suggest that these currents originated far from earth and that they flowed into

Field‐Aligned Currents in Auroral Vortices

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 2021
Abstract Auroral bright spots have been observed at Earth, Jupiter, and Saturn in regions that map to the magnetopause boundary layer. It has been suggested that the bright spots are associated with the Kelvin‐Helmholtz (KH) instability.

Field-aligned currents in the magnetosphere

Journal of Geophysical Research, 1967
Certain satellite and terrestrial observations of transient magnetic fluctuations show a high degree of localization, while other observations are of a definite worldwide character. The worldwide fluctuations in the magnetic field are probably well explained in terms of hydromagnetic waves propagating through the magnetosphere in modes with the wave ...

Field‐aligned currents of postnoon auroral arcs

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 2009
On 9 January 2008, postnoon (at about 15–16 magnetic local time [MLT]) poleward moving auroral arcs were observed over Svalbard during slightly negative interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) Bz and the IMF By gradually changing from near zero to about −3 nT.

Effects of Field-Aligned Currents on the Structure of the Ionosphere

Journal of Geophysical Research, 1968
The influence of electric currents along the magnetic field lines on the high-latitude F-layer ionosphere is investigated theoretically. It is shown that a current of either sign leads to a reduction of the total electron content and the maximum density, if the charge carriers have to be produced in the ionosphere.

Field‐aligned currents in the Earth's magnetotail

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 1981
Three field‐aligned current sheets are directly observed with plasma and magnetometer instrumentation on board the ISEE spacecraft located at ∼20 RE in the postmidnight sector of the magnetotail. These current sheets are encountered at the northern plasma sheet boundary as the plasma sheet expanded past the spacecraft positions during the recovery ...
