The Auroral electrojet and field-aligned current
Planetary and Space Science, 1976Abstract The location of field-aligned currents in the evening sector with respect to the auroral electrojets is examined. The tri-axial TRIAD satellite data and the simultaneous ground magnetometer data from along the Alaska meridian are analysed.

Mapping of the ionospheric field‐aligned currents to the equatorial magnetosphere [PDF]
The assimilative mapping of ionospheric electrodynamics (AMIE)‐derived ionospheric field‐aligned current patterns during the ninth Coordinated Data Analysis Workshop substorm event have been mapped to the magnetospheric equatorial plane, using the data‐based magnetospheric magnetic field model [Tsyganenko, 1995].

Field-aligned currents and the auroral electrojet
Journal of Geophysical Research, 1974A Nike Tomahawk with fields and particles payload was launched on Nov. 18, 1970, over a strong westward electrojet current and auroral forms moving rapidly to the east. Electron fluxes moving up and down the magnetic field lines were measured. Upward-moving electrons below 1-keV energy were dominant and were equivalent to a net downward electric ...

Field-aligned Currents in the Undisturbed Polar Ionosphere
pure and applied geophysics, 1989Field-aligned currents, FAC’s, which couple ionospheric currents at high latitudes with magnetospheric currents have become an essential cornerstone to our understanding of plasma dynamics in the polar region and in the earth’s magnetosphere. Initial investigators of polar electrodynamics including the aurora were unable to distinguish between the ...

Field Aligned Currents in the Magnetosphere
1974This paper deals with field aligned currents in general. Specific topics are: a brief review of the well established features; new results from the triaxial magnetometer experiment on the TRIAD satellite; comparison of the results from a variety of studies; relation of field aligned currents to other areas of research; and comments on future studies.

Minimization of field-aligned current and flow
Journal of Plasma Physics, 2005The radial profiles of current and flow permitted by the relaxed states of a two-fluid cylindrical plasma system using double Beltrami formulation are presented. The relaxed states are then compared with those of the internal conductor plasma configuration.

Closure of field-aligned currents in the ionosphere
Astrophysics and Space Science, 1981The ionospheric currentsj⊥ closing the field-aligned currents (FACs) flow mostly along the auroral oval and connect dawn and dusk sides of the oval. The currentj⊥ has a significant component directed across the auroral oval in the immediate vicinity of the interface between the two regions of Iijima and Potemra (1976) only.

Current Helicity and the Generation of Magnetic Field Aligned Currents
1991Reliable magnetic field measurements are still restricted to the photosphere and information on chromospheric and coronal magnetic fields stems mainly from the extrapolation of measured photospheric fields. The comparison of extrapolated force-free magnetic fields with chromospheric and coronal observations indicates that in active regions the current ...

Field‐Aligned Currents in the Magnetosphere–Ionosphere
2021Field‐aligned currents play a major role in magnetized plasmas. They are the main agents for coupling the dynamics between magnetosphere and ionosphere. Perturbations of magnetic field distribution, plasma pressure or flow on one end are communicated by field‐aligned currents along the whole flux tube.

Field-aligned currents in nonlinear auroral vortices
2023Velocity shears at the boundary layer that forms between a planetary magnetosheath and its magnetosphere can serve as effective voltage generators driving field-aligned currents and powering auroral emissions. Previously, an analytic solution was developed for the field aligned currents and electron precipitation assuming a linear Knight relation as an
