Direct strain tensor approximation for full‐field strain measurement methods
International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering, 2013SUMMARYFull‐field strain measurement techniques are based on computing the spatial derivatives of numerical or functional approximations of the underlying displacement fields extracted from digital imaging methods. These methods implicitly assume that the medium satisfies the strain compatibility conditions, which are only true in the case of a ...

Strain tensor field in proteins
Journal of Molecular Graphics, 1996The tensor fields of pressure strain imposed on protein molecules have been visualized by computer graphics and computational geometry. The pressure-induced deformations of lysozyme and myoglobin were analyzed by the present method, which regards each molecule as a patchwork of microscopic continuous bodies of Delaunay tetrahedra.

Engineering Monolayers With Strain Field
Materials, 2004A binary monolayer on an elastic substrate may self-organize into ordered nanoscale patterns. Here we report a work of using a substrate strain field to guide the self-assembly process. The study shows that straining a substrate uniformly does not influence the pattern.

Field induced strains in antiferroelectrics
IEEE Symposium on Ultrasonics, 2002Lead zirconate-based materials with a slight content of titanium undergo an antiferroelectric-ferroelectric phase transition when an electric field is applied. The strains accompanying this field-induced transition are gigantic in comparison with the strain change in the antiferroelectric or ferroelectric state.

Strain, 1985
Considering one‐axial strain fields in the penetration depth of X‐rays, the corresponding measurement distribution of e versus sin2 ψ are calculated for 24 different one‐axial strains. The parameter is the measurement direction. The deformations of neighbouring points are calculated with Taylor series and described with linear expressions.

STRAIN FIELDS IN DIAMONDLIKE AMORPHOUS CARBON
International Journal of Modern Physics B, 2000This paper reviews the fundamental ideas related to the concept of local atomic stresses and their application to the study of strain fields in ta-C. The calculations are based on Monte Carlo simulations within the empirical potential approach. We find that the stress distributions in ta-C are high inhomogeneous, both in the bulk as well as in the ...

Gauge fields and strain engineering
2012We discuss the physics of pseudomagnetic field,s which can be induced in graphene by applying strains, and show how they can be used to manipulate electronic transport through graphene heterostructures (strain engineering). We consider strain-induced pseudo-Landau levels, which were observed in graphene, and discuss the related valley quantum Hall ...

Strain fields at contacts between small particles
Journal of Colloid and Interface Science, 2003Stress fields between interacting small particles ( approximately 100 nm) have been investigated by transmission electron microscopy. The background for these TEM observations is discussed in terms of adhesion stress fields (due to surface forces), the action of an applied point force, possibly magnetic, and dislocations or misfit strains due to an ...

Dark field electron holography for strain measurement
Ultramicroscopy, 2011Dark field electron holography is a new TEM-based technique for measuring strain with nanometer scale resolution. Here we present the procedure to align a transmission electron microscope and obtain dark field holograms as well as the theoretical background necessary to reconstruct strain maps from holograms. A series of experimental parameters such as

Diffusion effects in calcium-regulated strain fields
Journal of Theoretical Biology, 1989The Goodwin-Trainor equations for cellular morphogenesis, based on calcium ion regulation of the visco-elastic properties of the cellular cortex, are generalized to the situation where the concentration of calcium ions (free plus bound) is allowed to change locally.
