Field Demonstration of Real-Time Wind Turbine Foundation Strain Monitoring

open access: yesSensors, 2017
Onshore wind turbine foundations are generally over-engineered as their internal stress states are challenging to directly monitor during operation.

Light intensity strain analysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 1973
A process is described for the analysis of the strain field of structures subjected to large deformations involving a low modulus substrate having a high modulus, relatively thin coating.

A model for alignment between microscopic rods and vorticity

open access: yes, 2012
Numerical simulations show that microscopic rod-like bodies suspended in a turbulent flow tend to align with the vorticity vector, rather than with the dominant eignevector of the strain-rate tensor. This paper investigates an analytically solvable limit

AAA+ protein unfoldases—the Moirai of the proteome

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
AAA+ unfoldases are essential molecular motors that power protein degradation and disaggregation. This review integrates recent cryo‐electron microscopy (cryo‐EM) structures and single‐molecule biophysical data to reconcile competing models of substrate translocation.

Strain-Based Room-Temperature Non-Volatile MoTe$_2$ Ferroelectric Phase Change Transistor

open access: yes, 2019
The primary mechanism of operation of almost all transistors today relies on electric-field effect in a semiconducting channel to tune its conductivity from the conducting 'on'-state to a non-conducting 'off'-state.

Nuclear pore links Fob1‐dependent rDNA damage relocation to lifespan control

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Damaged rDNA accumulates at a specific perinuclear interface that couples nucleolar escape with nuclear envelope association. Nuclear pores at this site help inhibit Fob1‐induced rDNA instability. This spatial organization of damage handling supports a functional link between nuclear architecture, rDNA stability, and replicative lifespan in yeast.

Pseudomagnetic fields and triaxial strain in graphene [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Strain fields in graphene giving rise to pseudomagnetic fields have received much attention due to the possibility of mimicking real magnetic fields with magnitudes of greater than 100 Tesla.

Exon 7 splicing of ERα predicts poor prognosis and increases phenotypic heterogeneity in luminal a subtype breast cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
ERα splice variant ERα∆7 lacks the C‐terminus, and its expression may change phenotypes of breast cancers. Our results showed that ERα∆7 is found in the luminal A subtype, and elevated ERα∆7 levels are linked to improved cell survival with lower proliferation and migration.

Experimentally induced errors in digital image correlation measurement of small strains with large gradients [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Digital Image Correlation or DIC is an already widespread and commonly used technique to perform full field strain measurements. Usually, a so called 'speckle pattern' is put on the specimen and then, pictures are taken first in the undeformed stage ...

Tuning the caloric response of BaTiO$_3$ by tensile epitaxial strain

open access: yes, 2016
We investigate the effect of epitaxial strain on the electrocaloric effect (ECE) in BaTiO$_3$ by means of ab initio based molecular dynamics simulations. We show that tensile strain can be used to optimize the operation range for ferroic cooling.
