Preconditioning for first-order spectral discretization [PDF]

open access: yes
Efficient solution of the equations from spectral discretizations is essential if the high-order accuracy of these methods is to be realized. Direct solution of these equations is rarely feasible, thus iterative techniques are required. A preconditioning

A study of the response of nonlinear springs [PDF]

open access: yes
The various phases to developing a methodology for studying the response of a spring-reinforced arch subjected to a point load are discussed. The arch is simply supported at its ends with both the spring and the point load assumed to be at midspan.

Nonlinear Instability in Dissipative Finite Difference Schemes [PDF]

open access: yesSIAM Review, 1989
A unified analysis of reaction-diffusion equations and their finite difference representations is presented. Continuous and discrete problems are studied from the perspective of bifurcation theory. The numerical instability is shown to be associated with the bifurcation of periodic orbits in discrete systems.

The Stability of One-Step Schemes for First-Order Two-Point Boundary Value Problems [PDF]

open access: yes, 1983
The stability of a finite difference scheme is related explicitly to the stability of the continuous problem being solved. At times, this gives materially better estimates for the stability constant than those obtained by the standard process of ...

Nonuniqueness of lattice Boltzmann schemes derived from finite difference methods

open access: yesExamples and Counterexamples
Recently, the construction of finite difference schemes from lattice Boltzmann schemes has been rigorously analyzed [Bellotti et al. (2022), Numer. Math. 152, pp. 1–40].

On Construction and Analysis of Finite Difference Schemes for Pseudoparabolic Problems with Nonlocal Boundary Conditions

open access: yesMathematical Modelling and Analysis, 2014
In this paper the one- and two-dimensional pseudoparabolic equations with nonlocal boundary conditions are approximated by the Euler finite difference scheme.

An explicit finite difference scheme for the Camassa-Holm equation

open access: yes, 2008
We put forward and analyze an explicit finite difference scheme for the Camassa-Holm shallow water equation that can handle general $H^1$ initial data and thus peakon-antipeakon interactions.

The finite difference scheme for mathematical modeling of wood drying process

open access: yesMathematical Modelling and Analysis, 2001
This work discusses issues on the design of finite difference schemes for modeling the moisture movement process in the wood. A new finite difference scheme is proposed.

Finite Difference Schemes for Poro-elastic ProblemS

open access: yesComputational Methods in Applied Mathematics, 2002
AbstractIn this paper, we present a finite difference analysis of the consolidation problem for saturated porous media. In the classical model, the behaviour of the porous environment – fluid system is described by a set of equations for the unknown vector displacements of the matrix skeleton and the fluid pressure.
