Stabilized finite volume element method for the 2D nonlinear incompressible viscoelastic flow equation

open access: yesBoundary Value Problems, 2017
In this article, we devote ourselves to building a stabilized finite volume element (SFVE) method with a non-dimensional real together with two Gaussian quadratures of the nonlinear incompressible viscoelastic flow equation in a two-dimensional (2D ...

Characterization of Nitinol Produced by Laser Powder Bed Fusion for Mechanical Metamaterial Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Stabilization of L‐PBF Ni50.7Ti49.3 under low‐cycle loading was investigated. Recoverable strain after cycling was dependent on the amount of applied load. Recovery ratio was 53.4% and 35.1% at intermediate and high load, respectively. The maximum total strain reached 10.3% at a high load of 1200 MPa.

A new theoretical approach to determine the air outlet temperature of an air-to-ground heat exchanger

open access: yesMethodsX
In this study, the control volume method is used to determine the air temperature at the outlet of an air-to-ground heat exchanger. Its implementation consists in dividing the duct of the ground-air heat exchanger into micro-volumes of identical size. An

A control volume-based finite element method for plane micropolar elasticity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
This paper describes the development of a numerical procedure for predicting deformations and stresses in a loaded two-dimensional membrane exhibiting micropolar or Cosserat constitutive behaviour. The procedure employs a conventional finite element (FE)

A Numerical–Experimental Approach for Multi‐Matrix Fiber‐Reinforced Plastics Characterization Using Finite Element Model Updating

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A numerical–experimental framework is developed for characterizing multi‐matrix fiber‐reinforced polymers (MM‐FRPs) combining epoxy and polyurethane matrices. Harmonic bending tests are integrated with finite element model updating (FEMU) to simultaneously identify elastic and viscoelastic material parameters.

Micro-XCT-based finite element method for predicting the elastic modulus of needle carbon-fiber-reinforced ceramic matrix composites

open access: yesScience and Engineering of Composite Materials, 2017
In this study, a finite element method was developed based on X-ray computer tomography to predict the elastic modulus of needle carbon-fiber-reinforced ceramic matrix composites with voids randomly existing in the material.

Analysis of a finite volume element method for the Stokes problem [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
In this paper we propose a stabilized conforming finite volume element method for the Stokes equations. On stating the convergence of the method, optimal a priori error estimates in different norms are obtained by establishing the adequate connection ...

Modeling seismic wave propagation and amplification in 1D/2D/3D linear and nonlinear unbounded media

open access: yes, 2010
To analyze seismic wave propagation in geological structures, it is possible to consider various numerical approaches: the finite difference method, the spectral element method, the boundary element method, the finite element method, the finite volume ...

COFFEE: an Optimizing Compiler for Finite Element Local Assembly [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The numerical solution of partial differential equations using the finite element method is one of the key applications of high performance computing. Local assembly is its characteristic operation. This entails the execution of a problem-specific kernel

Thermodynamic Pathways of Nonequilibrium Solidification in Wire‐Arc Additive Manufacturing Fe‐Based Multicomponent Alloy Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Geometry‐driven thermal behavior in wire‐arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) influences microstructural evolution during nonequilibrium solidification of a chemically complex Fe–Cr–Nb–W–Mo–C nanocomposite system. By comparing different deposits configurations, distinct entropy–cooling rate correlations, segregation, and carbide evolution are revealed ...
