Chemiluminescence of Firefly Luciferin without Enzyme

Science, 1962
We have been able to produce chemiluminescence in firefly luciferin without utilizing the enzyme luciferase. Following the analogous mechanism of the chemiluminescence of luminol in the organic solvent dimethyl sulfoxide, we have prepared synthetically the methyl ester of luciferin, the phosphate ester of luciferin and luciferyl adenylate ...

Cage the firefly luciferin! – a strategy for developing bioluminescent probes

Chem. Soc. Rev., 2013
Bioluminescent imaging (BLI) has been widely applicable in the imaging of process envisioned in life sciences. As the most conventional technique for BLI, the firefly luciferin-luciferase system is exceptionally functional in vitro and in vivo.

Firefly luciferase exhibits bimodal action depending on the luciferin chirality

Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 2005
Firefly luciferase is able to convert L-luciferin into luciferyl-CoA even under ordinary aerobic luciferin-luciferase reaction conditions. The luciferase is able to recognize strictly the chirality of the luciferin structure, serving as the acyl-CoA synthetase for L-luciferin, whereas d-luciferin is used for the bioluminescence reaction.

Novel Heterocyclic Analogues of Firefly Luciferin

Biochemistry, 2012
Five novel firefly luciferin analogues in which the benzothiazole ring system of the natural substrate was replaced with benzimidazole, benzofuran, benzothiophene, benzoxazole, and indole were synthesized. The fluorescence, bioluminescence, and kinetic properties of the compounds were evaluated with recombinant Photinus pyralis wild type luciferase ...
