Egg quality in fish is very variable. Some of the factors affecting egg quality in fish are known, but many (probably most) are unknown.

Unbound sialic acids in fish eggs
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta, 1960Abstract Relatively large quantities of sialic acids occur in an unbound form in trout eggs. Both N-glycolyl and N-acetylneuraminic acid are found within one cell, the trout egg. Preliminary studies on the permeability of the egg to free sialic acids are reported.

Egg quality and egg pigment content in salmonid fishes
Aquaculture, 1985Abstract The widespread belief in the superior quality of highly pigmented eggs is examined by bringing together evidence concerning the effect of the carotenoid content of salmonid eggs on their viability. It is concluded that, in rainbow trout, there is not a simple linear relation between these two quantities.

The spermatozoa and eggs of the cardinal fish
Journal of Fish Biology, 2003The gametes of the cardinal fish Apogon imberbis had the following characteristic: the semen contained both biflagellate ( c. 20% in the investigated samples) and monoflagellate ( c. 80%) spermatozoa. The spermatozoa were acrosomless, had an ovoid head, and a cylindrical midpiece. The midpiece contained a high number of mitochondria (seven–10).

Sarsia, 1968Abstract The distribution of fish eggs and larvae shows the importance of the current system in the Skagerrak. The Jutland, Baltic, and Norwegian (coastal) currents form together an anti-clockwise circulation which results in the ichthyoplankton drifting in a characteristic way.
