Stochastic perturbations and fisheries management [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
As most natural resources, fisheries are affected by random disturbances. The evolution of such resources may be modelled by a succession of deterministic process and random perturbations on biomass and/or growth rate at random times. We analyze the impact of the characteristics of the perturbations on the management of natural resources.

Physiological biomarkers and fisheries management [PDF]

open access: yesReviews in Fish Biology and Fisheries, 2021
AbstractThe benefits of physiological biomarkers, knowledge and concepts are well-established in fish and wildlife management as they confer the ability to understand mechanistic processes, identify cause-and-effect relationships, and develop predictive models.

DECENTRALIZATION AND FISHERIES MANAGEMENT IN THE BRAZILIAN AMAZON: RESOURCE RIGHTS AND ACCOUNTABILITY [PDF]

open access: yesAmbiente & Sociedade, 2017
Decentralizing management is often mentioned as a good strategy to make fisheries sustainable. Prior to evaluating the consequences of the decentralization process, there is a need to consider the degree to which decentralizing the management and ...

Barriers to implementation of dynamic reference points in fisheries management

open access: yesFACETS, 2023
Fish populations are dynamic; their productivity depends on the environment, predator and prey interactions, and fisheries harvest rates. Failure to account for these factors in fisheries science and management can lead to a misestimation of stock ...

Urban recreational fisheries in the Australian coastal zone:The sustainability challenge [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Recreational fishing is an important wildlife harvesting activity in urban coastal areas, and recreational harvest in these areas can frequently exceed the commercial harvest.

Technological Development and Fisheries Management [PDF]

open access: yesReviews in Fisheries Science & Aquaculture, 2014
Many marine fish stocks are overexploited and considerable overcapacity exists in fishing fleets worldwide. One of the reasons for the imbalance between resource availability and fishing capacity is technological development, which continuously increases the efficiency of the vessels—a mechanism referred to as “technological creep.” We review how the ...

Strong fisheries management and governance positively impact ecosystem status [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Fisheries have had major negative impacts on marine ecosystems, and effective fisheries management and governance are needed to achieve sustainable fisheries, biodiversity conservation goals and thus good ecosystem status. To date, the IndiSeas programme

Exploring the effect of the spatial scale of fishery management [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Theoretical Biology, 390:14-22, 2016, 2015
For any spatially explicit management, determining the appropriate spatial scale of management decisions is critical to success at achieving a given management goal. Specifically, managers must decide how much to subdivide a given managed region: from implementing a uniform approach across the region to considering a unique approach in each of one ...

The dawn of Darwinian fishery management [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Ulf Dieckmann, Mikko Heino, and Adriaan Rijnsdorp suggest that we are incurring a "Darwinian debt" that will have to be repaid by future fishers and consumers.
