Modeling regenerative workpiece vibrations in five-axis milling

Production Engineering, 2008
During milling—especially of thin-walled components—the dynamic behavior of the workpiece-tool-machine-system influences the milling process and particularly the quality of the resulting workpiece surface. This article focuses on the presentation of a simulation concept for predicting regenerative workpiece vibrations, which combines a finite element ...

Virtual Five-Axis Flank Milling of Jet Engine Impellers—Part I: Mechanics of Five-Axis Flank Milling

Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering, 2008
This work is the first of a two part paper on cutting force prediction and feed optimization for the five-axis flank milling of jet engine impellers. In Part I, a mathematical model for predicting cutting forces is presented for five-axis machining with tapered, helical, ball-end mills with variable pitch and serrated flutes.

Virtual Five-Axis Flank Milling of Jet Engine Impellers: Part 1 — Mechanics of Five-Axis Flank Milling

Volume 3: Design and Manufacturing, 2007
Jet engine impeller blades are flank-milled with tapered, helical, ball-end mills on five-axis machining centers. The impellers are made from difficult-to-cut titanium or nickel alloys, and the blades must be machined within tight tolerances. As a consequence, deflections of the tool and flexible workpiece can jeopardize the precision of the impellers ...

CAx Framework for Planning Five-Axis Milling Processes

2010
Given an efficient process, five-axis milling is a productive technology that can help production industries in countries with a high level of workers’ wages to remain competitive on the global market. For planning the required machining processes, engineers have to be supported by methods and tools. In current research at WZL of RWTH Aachen and IPT of

Virtual Five-Axis Flank Milling of Jet Engine Impellers: Part 2 — Feed Rate Optimization of Five-Axis Flank Milling

Volume 3: Design and Manufacturing, 2007
This paper presents optimization schemes for the five-axis flank milling of jet engine impellers based on the mechanics model explained in Part I. The process is optimized by varying the feed automatically as the tool-workpiece engagements, i.e. the process, varies along the tool path.

Five-axis milling of sculptured surfaces of the turbine blade

Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology, 2018
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to determine the influence of a toroidal cutter axis orientation and a variable radius of curvature of the machined contour of sculptured surface on the five-axes milling process. Simulation and experimental research performed in this work are aimed to determine the relationship between the parameters of five-axes ...

A study on the five-axis end milling for sculptured surfaces

KSME Journal, 1995
The direction vector of milling cutter for CL-data of five-axis milling is obtained by the fact that the bottom part of the milling cutter rides on free-form surfaces using the z-map method. Since the direction vector is known, CL-data can be transformed to the NC-code with regard to the geometry of the five-axis machine and post-processing.

Force Modeling of Five-Axis Microball-End Milling

Journal of Micro and Nano-Manufacturing, 2015
This paper presents a five-axis ball-end milling force model that is specifically tailored to microscale machining. A composite cutting force is generated by combining two force contributions from a shearing/ploughing slip-line (SL) field model and a quasi-static indentation (ID) model. To fully capture the features of microscale five-axis machining, a
