Analysing the significance of small conformational changes and low occupancy states in serial crystallographic data

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This protocol paper outlines methods to establish the success of a time‐resolved serial crystallographic experiment, by means of statistical analysis of timepoint data in reciprocal space and models in real space. We show how to amplify the signal from excited states to visualise structural changes in successful experiments.

A Symbolic Noise Analysis Approach to Word-Length Optimization in DSP Hardware [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
This paper addresses the problem of choosing different word-lengths for each functional unit in fixed-point implementations of DSP algorithms. A symbolic-noise analysis method is introduced for high-level synthesis of DSP algorithms in digital hardware ...

The skills required for transition to university and study in biological sciences: A student perspective

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Bioscience students were asked for their opinions on the value and teaching of skills. 204 responded that teamwork, time management and study skills are necessary to reach University, that scientific writing, research, laboratory and presentation skills are taught effectively during their studies, while other skills are gained inherently through study ...

Existence of positive solutions in the space of Lipschitz functions for a fractional boundary problem with nonlocal boundary condition

open access: yes, 2021
In this paper, we study the existence of positive solutions for the following nonlinear fractional boundary value problem: D0+αu(t)+f(t,u(t),(Hu)(t))=0 ...

The crystal structure of the Borrelia burgdorferi nicotinamidase BBE22 resolves a long‐standing annotation error

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The crystal structure of Borrelia burgdorferi nicotinamidase (PncA/BBE22) reveals the correct full‐length protein initiated from a non‐canonical AUU start codon. The structure validates previous biochemical findings and resolves a long‐standing annotation error, demonstrating that the truncated database sequence is structurally incompatible with the ...

Discussion on the fixed point problems with constraint inequalities

open access: yesJournal of Inequalities and Applications, 2018
In this paper, we introduce the concept of comparable complete metric spaces and consider some fixed point theorems for mappings in the setting of incomplete metric spaces. We obtain the results of Ansari et al. [J. Fixed Point Theory Appl. 20:26, 2018] with weaker conditions. Moreover, we provide some corollaries and examples show that our main result

Emerging insights into CC and CXC chemokines and their receptors in Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The dual roles of CC and CXC chemokines in distinguishing active, latent, and subclinical tuberculosis were reviewed, along with an evaluation of their potential as diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets to advance precision medicine in tuberculosis management. The graphical abstract was generated with AI assistance (Gemini 3.0).

Double solutions of three-point boundary-value problems for second-order differential equations

open access: yesElectronic Journal of Differential Equations, 2004
A double fixed point theorem is applied to yield the existence of at least two nonnegative solutions for the three-point boundary-value problem for a second-order differential equation, $$displaylines{ y'' + f(y)=0,quad 0 leq t leq 1,cr y(0) =0,quad y(p)

Core Many-to-one Matchings by Fixed-point Methods [PDF]

open access: yes
We characterize the core many-to-one matchings as fixed points of a map. Our characterization gives an algorithm for finding core allocations; the algorithm is efficient and simple to implement.

How phagocytic cells kill bacteria: Lessons from a professional killer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
How phagocytic cells ingest and kill bacteria has been studied for more than a century, but many questions remain unanswered. The study of the amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum brings new answers, and new questions. Professional phagocytic cells such as neutrophils and macrophages, as well as free‐living soil amoebae like Dictyostelium discoideum, employ
