Flagellum-deficient Pseudomonas aeruginosa is more virulent than non-motile but flagellated mutants in a cystic fibrosis mouse model

open access: yesMicrobiology Spectrum
Loss of the flagellum marks the pathoadaptation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to the cystic fibrosis (CF) airway environment during lung disease. Losing the flagellum is advantageous to the bacterium as the flagellum can be recognized by immune cells.

In-phase and anti-phase flagellar synchronization by waveform compliance and basal coupling

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2017
We present a theory of flagellar synchronization in the green alga Chlamydomonas , using full treatment of flagellar hydrodynamics and measured beat patterns.

The GTPase IFT27 is involved in both anterograde and retrograde intraflagellar transport

open access: yeseLife, 2014
The construction of cilia and flagella depends on intraflagellar transport (IFT), the bidirectional movement of two protein complexes (IFT-A and IFT-B) driven by specific kinesin and dynein motors.

Dynamics of a bacterial flagellum under reverse rotation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
To initiate tumbling of an E. coli, one of the helical flagella reverses its sense of rotation. It then transforms from its normal form first to the transient semicoiled state and subsequently to the curly-I state.

Molecular basis of the morphogenesis of sperm head and tail in mice

open access: yesReproductive Medicine and Biology, 2022
Background The spermatozoon has a complex molecular apparatus necessary for fertilization in its head and flagellum. Recently, numerous genes that are needed to construct the molecular apparatus of spermatozoa have been identified through the analysis of

Cell body rocking is a dominant mechanism for flagellar synchronization in a swimming alga

open access: yes, 2013
The unicellular green algae Chlamydomonas swims with two flagella, which can synchronize their beat. Synchronized beating is required to swim both fast and straight.

Molecular analysis of the crenarchaeal flagellum [PDF]

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, 2011
SummaryThe ability to move towards favourable conditions provides fundamental advantages to organisms. Interestingly, flagella as motility structures evolved independently in the bacterial and the archaeal kingdom. Whereas bacterial flagella have been intensively studied, our knowledge regarding the archaeal counterpart is mostly restricted to ...
