Feasibility of Flat Oyster (Ostrea edulis L.) restoration in the Dutch part of the North Sea [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
For the recovery of flat oyster beds, knowledge is required of the conditions under which the active restoration of this species in the North Sea can be successfully implemented. This is the subject of the current feasibility study.

Innovative Field Applications of Probiotics, Prebiotics, and Medicinal Plant Products for Disease Control in Aquaculture

open access: yesJournal of Fish Diseases, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Disease outbreaks and the associated reliance on antibiotics pose major constraints to the sustainability of modern aquaculture. As regulatory pressures increase and consumer demand shifts toward residue‐free production, diverse biological interventions are gaining prominence as viable alternatives to chemotherapeutics.

Integrated multi-trophic aquaculture of the European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis Linnaeus, 1758): A case study from Boka Kotorska Bay (Montenegro)

open access: yesOceanological and Hydrobiological Studies
Although integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) is recognized as a strategy to control and minimize the impact of fish farming on the marine environment, there are still many unknowns when it comes to this type of farming.

SynapTrack: An automated tool for synapse quantification

open access: yesJournal of Microscopy, EarlyView.
Abstract Reliable synapse quantification remains challenging, particularly in high‐throughput fluorescence imaging workflows. Here we present SynapTrack, a fully automated FIJI/ImageJ‐based tool for quantifying synapses in cultured neurons and brain tissue sections with minimal user intervention.

Human dissection and comparative anatomy: Archaeological evidence for nineteenth‐century anatomical practice at University College London

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
Excavation at University College London revealed more than 8700 human skeletal fragments representing at least 38 individuals, alongside over 800 animal remains. Features consistent with dissection, specimen preparation and curation provide evidence for the use of human and animal material in nineteenth‐century anatomical education, offering rare ...

Understanding Online Meaning‐Making: Normativity, Polycentricity, and Memetic Communication Through a Chronotopic‐Scalar Lens

open access: yesJournal of Sociolinguistics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This article investigates memetic interaction as an illustrative example of complex polycentric online communication. Using a chronotopic‐scalar framework, it offers a theorized account of how online (inter)action works, how it is guided by (perceptions of) normativities, and how it is in dialogue with the “offline.” Specifically, I focus on ...

Identifying thermally tolerant bull kelp (Nereocystis luetkeana) source populations for restoration under climate change

open access: yesJournal of Phycology, EarlyView.
Abstract Kelp forests are declining in many parts of the world due to climate change and other stressors. Restoration is one solution to return kelp forests to places where they have been lost, yet continually warming oceans may necessitate the identification of thermally tolerant strains to facilitate the long‐term success of kelp restoration.

That sinkin’ feeling: Environmentally induced distress on a disappearing island

open access: yesMedical Anthropology Quarterly, EarlyView.
Abstract Residents of Tangier Island, Virginia, a subsiding island in the Chesapeake Bay, embody psychosocial dimensions of environmental change. Analysis of ethnographic data shows islanders’ experiences and articulations of anxiety, panic, and despair as “that sinkin’ feeling,” resulting from the stress of living with the long‐term threat of imminent
