Food Spectrum and Habitat-Specific Diets of Benthic Foraminifera From the Wadden Sea – A Fatty Acid Biomarker Approach

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2020
Tidal coasts are characterized by natural disturbances, forming a broad variety of habitats, which provide different niches and varying food resources for benthic foraminifera.

Analysis of Carbohydrates and Glycoconjugates by Matrix‐Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Mass Spectrometry: An Update for 2023–2024

open access: yesMass Spectrometry Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The use of MALDI mass spectrometry for the analysis of carbohydrates and glycoconjugates is a well‐established technique and this comprehensive review is the twelfth update of the original article published in 1999 and brings coverage of the literature to the end of 2024.

Ecosystem engineers and functional dominance: when species loss matters for ecosystem function

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
Understanding when and why species loss affects community function in natural communities remains an open question in ecology. Recent cross‐system analyses have shown that functional dominance is associated with whether species loss matters: in communities dominated by few high‐performing species, lost species contribute little to function.

An Enhanced Soft‐Containing Gripper for Pick‐And‐Place of Oyster Products at Extreme Handling Speed

open access: yesJournal of Field Robotics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Soft robotic grippers have been developed for high‐speed handling of soft, fragile foods. For example, our previously designed soft‐containing gripper has been implemented on food production lines. However, existing soft robotic grippers remain inadequate for food pick‐and‐place tasks at extreme handling speeds (e.g., > 70 pcs/min).

Cadmium bioaccumulation in European flat oysters (Ostrea edulis) from Middle Adriatic Sea (San Benedetto del Tronto district, Italy)

open access: yesItalian Journal of Food Safety, 2014
Bivalve molluscs represent an important source of cadmium exposure in humans, in particular oysters, because of their high filter feeding capability and high concentration of metal-binding metallothionein in tissues.

Localizable Climate Change Education in Schools: Examining Impacts on Students' Environmental Science Agency

open access: yesScience Education, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT As our daily lives become increasingly affected by climate change, school‐based science education plays a critical role in preparing students to understand and respond to this global crisis. This cohort controlled quasi‐experimental study conducted in the United States examined whether a localized climate change storyline unit compared to ...

Seasonal variation in reproductive activity and biochemical composition of flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) in the Homa Lagoon, Izmir Bay, Turkey

open access: yesScientia Marina, 2015
The reproductive cycle of the flat oyster, Ostrea edulis Linnaeus, 1758, in Homa Lagoon, Izmir Bay, Turkey was examined from August 2008 to July 2009. Gonad samples were analysed histologically in order to determine the sex ratio and gonad development ...

Flat oyster pilot design in North Sea offshore wind farm [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Motivation flat oyster pilot in wind farms. Flat oyster beds provide natural hard-substrate habitat in a predominantly soft-bottom marine environment. In addition, they change environmental conditions by filtering, nutrient recycling and carbon storage ...

Adsorption‐Programmed Transformation of a Two‐Dimensional Cu–Imidazolate Framework into Mn‐Integrated Catalytic Nanonetwork

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
A freeze‐dried copper‐based metal‐organic framework removes more than 95% of manganese from water. Capturing the metal reorganizes the framework, giving the used adsorbent a second life as a reusable catalyst that produces valuable ester products in yields up to 84%.

Mobile consumers influence the shoreward edge of intertidal seagrass ecosystems

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
Ecological paradigms suggest that the environmentally stressful edge of a habitat is determined by physical factors. The work finds that, counter to these paradigms, an environmentally stressful edge can also be impacted by biotic interactions and are more complex than suggested.
