In vivo imaging of Zika virus reveals dynamics of viral invasion in immune-sheltered tissues and vertical propagation during pregnancy [PDF]
Rationale: Zika virus (ZIKV) is a pathogenic virus known to cause a wide range of congenital abnormalities, including microcephaly, Guillain-Barre syndrome, meningoencephalitis, and other neurological complications, in humans. This study investigated the

Spatio‐temporal Usutu virus model explains Eurasian blackbird Turdus merula population trends
Emerging vector‐borne pathogens (VBPs) pose significant global health threats, occasionally causing widespread outbreaks with high wildlife mortality. Understanding climatic and anthropogenic drivers behind transmission dynamics in wildlife populations is key to mitigate health risks.

Zika Virus Attenuation by Codon Pair Deoptimization Induces Sterilizing Immunity in Mouse Models. [PDF]
Zika virus (ZIKV) infection during the large epidemics in the Americas is related to congenital abnormities or fetal demise. To date, there is no vaccine, antiviral drug, or other modality available to prevent or treat Zika virus infection.

Abstract Aim To estimate the weighted prevalence of hepatitis E virus (HEV) antibodies and risk factors among pregnant women in Burkina Faso and to evaluate the efficiency of dried blood spots (DBS) in detecting HEV antibodies. Methods We first evaluated the efficiency of DBS detecting HEV antibodies by comparing 62 DBS with matched serum samples using

Life in urban areas may alter the gut microbiota and host physiology, leading to a higher susceptibility to pathogens. In contrast, specific members of the gut microbiota community have been shown to mitigate the intensity of malaria infection. House sparrows, living in close proximity to humans, are exposed to a unique environment with human‐shaped ...

Cryo-EM structure of the mature dengue virus at 3.5-Å resolution. [PDF]
Regulated by pH, membrane-anchored proteins E and M function during dengue virus maturation and membrane fusion. Our atomic model of the whole virion from cryo-electron microscopy at 3.5-Å resolution reveals that in the mature virus at neutral ...

Initiation of hepatitis C virus infection is dependent on cholesterol and cooperativity between CD81 and scavenger receptor B type I. [PDF]
In the past several years, a number of cellular proteins have been identified as candidate entry receptors for hepatitis C virus (HCV) by using surrogate models of HCV infection.

We identified Culex pipiens bloodmeals at the species level in natural, agricultural and peri‐urban habitats and calculated host preferences based on forage ratios. This analysis showed Passeriformes, and in particular Columba livia, Passer montanus and Turdus sp., to be the preferred Cx. pipiens hosts.
