Chemical magnetoreception: bird cryptochrome 1a is excited by blue light and forms long-lived radical-pairs. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2007
Cryptochromes (Cry) have been suggested to form the basis of light-dependent magnetic compass orientation in birds. However, to function as magnetic compass sensors, the cryptochromes of migratory birds must possess a number of key biophysical ...

Chronic Hypoxia Enhances β-Oxidation-Dependent Electron Transport via Electron Transferring Flavoproteins

open access: yesCells, 2019
Hypoxia poses a stress to cells and decreases mitochondrial respiration, in part by electron transport chain (ETC) complex reorganization. While metabolism under acute hypoxia is well characterized, alterations under chronic hypoxia largely remain ...

Refining the reaction mechanism of O2 towards its co-substrate in cofactor-free dioxygenases [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Cofactor-less oxygenases perform challenging catalytic reactions between singlet co-substrates and triplet oxygen, in spite of apparently violating the spin-conservation rule.

Reactions of electron-transfer flavoprotein and electron-transfer flavoprotein: ubiquinone oxidoreductase [PDF]

open access: yesBiochemical Journal, 1987
Electron-transfer flavoprotein:ubiquinone oxidoreductase (ETF-Q oxidoreductase) catalyses the re-oxidation of reduced electron-transfer flavoprotein (ETF) with ubiquinone-1 (Q-1) as the electron acceptor. A kinetic assay for the enzyme was devised in which glutaryl-CoA in the presence of glutaryl-CoA dehydrogenase was used to reduce ETFox.

Characterization of the flavin–protein interaction in L ‐Lactate oxidase and old yellow enzyme by resonance inverse Raman spectroscopy [PDF]

open access: yes, 1987
Resonance inverse Raman spectroscopy was used to examine the interactions between the flavin and surounding protein in L ‐lactate oxidase (from Mycobacterium smegmatis ) and Old Yellow Enzyme (from brewer's bottom yeast).

Predicting cervical cancer DNA methylation from genetic data using multivariate CMMP

open access: yesCanadian Journal of Statistics, EarlyView.
Abstract Epigenetic modifications link the environment to gene expression and play a crucial role in tumour development. DNA methylation, in particular, is gaining attention in cancer research, including cervical cancer, the focus of this study.

Electrochemical and Structural Characterization of Azotobacter vinelandii Flavodoxin II [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Azotobacter vinelandii flavodoxin II serves as a physiological reductant of nitrogenase, the enzyme system mediating biological nitrogen fixation. Wildtype A. vinelandii flavodoxin II was electrochemically and crystallographically characterized to better

Myocardial inflammation is associated with impaired mitochondrial oxidative capacity in ischaemic cardiomyopathy

open access: yesESC Heart Failure, Volume 12, Issue 2, Page 1246-1255, April 2025.
Abstract Aims Myocardial inflammation and impaired mitochondrial oxidative capacity are hallmarks of heart failure (HF) pathophysiology. The extent of myocardial inflammation in patients suffering from ischaemic cardiomyopathy (ICM) or dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) and its association with mitochondrial energy metabolism are unknown.
