Flexicurity: A conceptual critique

‘Flexicurity’ has become an influential concept in academic and political discourse, in particular since the European Commission placed it at the core of the European Employment Strategy. However, the concept is underdeveloped and suffers from a number of serious shortcomings. In this article we discuss a number of its problematic features.

Abstract Some Japanese reformers claim the only alternative to economic corrosion is a harsh Anglo-American style of neoliberalism. But there is a third choice: the Nordic system of “flexicurity” (flexibility and security). Market-led creative destruction creates wealth which helps fund measures promoting equality and security.
