Xanthomonas albilineans is able to move outside of the sugarcane xylem despite its reduced genome and the absence of a Hrp type III secretion system. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Xanthomonas albilineans, the causal agent of leaf scald disease of sugarcane, is a pathogen that experienced genome reduction during its speciation. Additionally, this xanthomonad is notably missing the Hrp type III secretion system and the xanthan gene ...

Dynamics and Control of Sugarcane Smut Using Deterministic and Stochastic Epidemic Models

open access: yesNatural Resource Modeling, Volume 38, Issue 1, February 2025.
ABSTRACT Sugarcane smut disease is a serious issue for farmers as it can greatly reduce sugarcane yield. It is important to manage this disease effectively to prevent economic losses. Farmers can use resistant varieties of sugarcane, remove diseased plants manually, or apply appropriate fungicides to control the spread of the disease; however, the ...

Quorum sensing genes rpfF and xanB2 are not essential for albicidin production nor sugarcane colonization by Xanthomonas albilineans [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Xanthomonas albilineans (Xa) produces albicidin, a unique and specific toxin that causes foliar symptoms of sugarcane leaf scald disease. In X. campestris pv.

Chronic exposure to glyphosate in Florida manatee

open access: yesEnvironment International, 2021
Florida manatees depend on freshwater environments as a source of drinking water and as warm-water refuges. These freshwater environments are in direct contact with human activities where glyphosate-based herbicides are being used. Glyphosate is the most

The genus Sipha Passerini (Hemiptera: Aphididae) in North America [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Five species of the aphid genus Sipha Passerini (Hemiptera: Aphididae) are reported in North America and are reviewed herein. Of these species, three are adventive species and include: Sipha elegans del Guercio, Sipha glyceriae (Kaltenbach), and Sipha ...

Dynamic movement patterns of commensal rodents Mastomys natalensis and Rattus rattus: determining differential habitat use using Rhodamine B

open access: yesPest Management Science, Volume 81, Issue 1, Page 316-326, January 2025.
Two rodent pest species, Mastomys natalensis and Rattus rattus, demonstrate persistent use of nonpreferred habitats. Although both were rarely caught in their nonpreferred habitat, a high proportion of animals consumed Rhodamine B bait when it was placed in their nonpreferred habitat.

Cryopreservation of sugarcane embryogenic callus using a simplified freezing process [PDF]

open access: yesCRYO-LETTERS, Volume: 19, Issue: 3, Pages: 171-176, Published: MAY-JUN 1998, Document Type:Article Published by Cryo-Letters, 7, Wootton Way, Cambridge CB3 9LX, U.K, 2020
A simplified freezing process was developed and successfully applied to embryogenic calluses of three sugarcane commercial hybrids (Saccharum sp. cv. CP 5243, C 91-301 and C 1051-73). To obtain optimal survival, the calluses were pretreated with a cryoprotective solution containing 10% DMSO and 0.3 to 0.75M sucrose.

Advancements in smart agriculture: A systematic literature review on state‐of‐the‐art plant disease detection with computer vision

open access: yesIET Computer Vision, Volume 19, Issue 1, January/December 2025.
Plant diseases are known to cause negative impacts and financial losses which are usually found on plant leaves and detection using traditional methods is a labor‐intensive process. Smart agriculture applications based on computer vision are being developed to detect and control of plant diseases.

Revisiting the Narrative of Deforestation in Central and Southern Mainland Early Modern Portugal as a ‘Ruined Landscape’: The Case of Shipbuilding in Lisbon

open access: yesHistory, Volume 110, Issue 389, Page 24-48, January 2025.
Abstract Scholars have largely blamed shipbuilding for maritime expansion for being the main driver of deforestation in early modern Portugal. This article sets out to revisit the origins and reproduction of this narrative by analysing three interconnected elements in a case study of Lisbon's shipyards.

Precision Robotic Spot-Spraying: Reducing Herbicide Use and Enhancing Environmental Outcomes in Sugarcane [PDF]

open access: yes
Precise robotic weed control plays an essential role in precision agriculture. It can help significantly reduce the environmental impact of herbicides while reducing weed management costs for farmers. In this paper, we demonstrate that a custom-designed robotic spot spraying tool based on computer vision and deep learning can significantly reduce ...
