Latest improvements in field deployable compound specific isotope analyzer based on quantum cascade lasers and hollow waveguide [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
In our development of a field deployable infrared isotope ratio spectrometer (IR2) for compound specific isotope analysis (CSIA), the IR2‘s accuracy and stability have reached a stage that small fractionation in reference gas pulses generated as standard

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Effects of Angular Dependency of Particulate Light Scattering Intensity on Determination of Samples with Bimodal Size Distributions Using Dynamic Light Scattering Methods

open access: yesNanomaterials, 2018
The angular dependency of light scattering intensity from differently sized particles strongly influences the apparent particle size distribution, as determined by dynamic light scattering (DLS) methods. Manufactured nanomaterials have size distributions

Non-WKB Models of the FIP Effect: The Role of Slow Mode Waves

open access: yes, 2011
A model for element abundance fractionation between the solar chromosphere and corona is further developed. The ponderomotive force due to Alfven waves propagating through, or reflecting from the chromosphere in solar conditions generally accelerates ...

Soil water stable isotopes reveal evaporation dynamics at the soil–plant–atmosphere interface of the critical zone [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Acknowledgements. We are thankful for the support by Audrey Innes during all laboratory work. We further thank Jonathan Dick for running the isotope analysis of precipitation samples and Annette C. Raffan for her support in the soil texture analysis.

Characterizing the salivary RNA landscape to identify potential diagnostic, prognostic, and follow‐up biomarkers for breast cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study explores salivary RNA for breast cancer (BC) diagnosis, prognosis, and follow‐up. High‐throughput RNA sequencing identified distinct salivary RNA signatures, including novel transcripts, that differentiate BC from healthy controls, characterize histological and molecular subtypes, and indicate lymph node involvement.

Improving PARP inhibitor efficacy in bladder cancer without genetic BRCAness by combination with PLX51107

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Clinical trials on PARP inhibitors in urothelial carcinoma (UC) showed limited efficacy and a lack of predictive biomarkers. We propose SLFN5, SLFN11, and OAS1 as UC‐specific response predictors. We suggest Talazoparib as the better PARP inhibitor for UC than Olaparib.

Strength through diversity: how cancers thrive when clones cooperate

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Intratumor heterogeneity can offer direct benefits to the tumor through cooperation between different clones. In this review, Kuiken et al. discuss existing evidence for clonal cooperativity to identify overarching principles, and highlight how novel technological developments could address remaining open questions.

Silver nanoparticles as a medical device in healthcare settings: a five-step approach for candidate screening of coating agents [PDF]

open access: yesRoyal Society Open Science, 2018
Silver nanoparticle-based antimicrobials can promote a long lasting bactericidal effect without detrimental toxic side effects. However, there is not a clear and complete protocol to define and relate the properties of the particles (size, shape, surface

Probing the isospin dependent mean field and nucleon nucleon cross section in the medium by the nucleon emissions

open access: yes, 2003
We study the isospin effects of the mean field and two-body collision on the nucleon emissions at the intermediate energy heavy ion collisions by using an isospin dependent transport theory.
