Introducing one-shot work into fluctuation relations

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2015
Two approaches to small-scale and quantum thermodynamics are fluctuation relations and one-shot statistical mechanics. Fluctuation relations (such as Crooks’ theorem and Jarzynski's equality) relate nonequilibrium behaviors to equilibrium quantities such

Nonlinear Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamics Based on the Ehrenfest–Klein Model

open access: yesEntropy, 2020
Nonlinear non-equilibrium thermodynamic relations have been constructed based on the generalized Ehrenfest−Klein model. Using these relations, the behavior of the entropy and its production in time at arbitrary deviations from equilibrium has been ...

Generalisation of fluctuation-dissipation theorem to systems with absorbing states

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2023
Systems that evolve towards a state from which they cannot depart are common in nature. But the fluctuation-dissipation theorem (FDT), a fundamental result in statistical mechanics, is mainly restricted to systems near-stationarity.

Fluctuation relations for heat engines in time-periodic steady states

open access: yes, 2012
A fluctuation relation for heat engines (FRHE) has been derived recently. In the beginning, the system is in contact with the cooler bath. The system is then coupled to the hotter bath and external parameters are changed cyclically, eventually bringing ...

Experimental study of the fluctuation theorem in a nonequilibrium steady state [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The fluctuation theorem (FT) quantifies the probability of second law violations in small systems over short time scales. While this theorem has been experimentally demonstrated for systems that are perturbed from an initial equilibrium state, there are ...

Ferromagnetism of Molecular Beam Epitaxy‐grown Ultra‐thin Cr2Ge2Te6 Films Down to the Monolayer Limit on Si Substrates

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Uniform monolayer Cr2Ge2Te6 films are achieved on Si substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. Intrinsic ferromagnetism with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy is established in the films by anomalous Hall effect and superconducting quantum interference device measurements, albeit with strong magnetic fluctuations characteristic of its 2D nature.

Fluctuating relativistic hydrodynamics from Crooks theorem

open access: yesJournal of High Energy Physics, 2021
We use the Crooks fluctuation theorem [1, 2] together with Zubarev hydro- dynamics [3] to develop a bottom-up theory of hydrodynamic fluctuations. We also use thermodynamic uncertainity relations to estimate bottom-up limits to dissipative transport ...

On the concept of effective temperature in current carrying quantum critical states

open access: yes, 2009
Quantum criticality has attracted considerable attention both theoretically and experimentally as a way to describe part of the phase diagram of strongly correlated systems.
