Subseasonal controls of U.S. landfalling tropical cyclones
Landfalling tropical cyclones (LTCs) are the most devastating disaster to affect the U.S., while the demonstration of skillful subseasonal (between 10 days and one season) prediction of LTCs is less promising.

An Efficient Method for Computing the Power Potential of Bypass Hydropower Installations
Small-scale hydropower installations make possible a transition towards decentralized electrical power production with very low ecological footprint. However, the prediction of their power potential is difficult, because the incoming flow velocity and ...

Electrorheological Fluid Dynamics [PDF]
We use the Onsager principle to derive a two-phase continuum formulation for the hydrodynamics of the electrorheological (ER) fluid, consisting of dielectric microspheres dispersed in an insulating liquid. Predictions of the theory are in excellent agreement with the experiments.

Fluid Dynamics Without Fluids [PDF]
This chapter will discuss some interesting real applications where Fluid Dynamics equations found fruitful applications without dealing with "strictly speaking" fluids. In particular, thanks to the large set of analyses performed over different kinds of fluids in different operating and boundary conditions, a wide range of Computational Fluid Dynamics ...

The unpredictably eruptive dynamics of spruce budworm populations in eastern Canada
We examine historical population data for spruce budworm from several locations through the period 1930–1997, and use density‐dependent recruitment curves to test whether the pattern of population growth over time is more consistent with Royama's (1984; Ecological Monographs 54:429–462) linear R(t) model of harmonic oscillation at Green River New ...
