Evaluation of Methods for Identifying Human Monocytes by Flow Cytometry: TLR2 May be an Optimal Marker

open access: yesImmunology, EarlyView.
Monocytes play crucial roles in the pathobiology of a wide range of medical conditions, including infection, autoimmunity, cardiovascular disease and malignancies. Studies using flow cytometry revealed the complexity of monocyte biology, including the identification of three human monocyte subsets: classical (CD14pos CD16neg), intermediate (CD14pos ...

First cytogenetic characterization of the southern pygmy perch Nannoperca australis (Teleostei: Percichthyidae): Karyotype, heterochromatin and repetitive DNA organization

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Chromosome organization and repetitive DNA distribution are important components of genome evolution in teleost fishes but remain poorly characterized in many species of ecological and conservation relevance. We performed a detailed cytogenetic analysis of the southern pygmy perch, Nannoperca australis, a small freshwater species widely used ...

Using confocal microscopy and image processing to measure properties of sub‐resolution cell structures: Application to cardiac transverse tubules

open access: yesJournal of Microscopy, EarlyView.
Abstract Confocal microscopes increase the resolution of images by rejecting unwanted data from the out of focus regions of the specimen. This incurs a penalty in the recorded signal to noise ratio that may be partially ameliorated by inputting additional information during image processing.

Desmin is not ubiquitously expressed in head and neck muscle fibers

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
Desmin is not ubiquitously expressed in human head and neck muscle fibers. A subset of fibers showed absent or very weak desmin immunoreactivity, with corresponding reduction or absence of desmin mRNA expression. Abstract Desmin, a major muscle‐specific intermediate filament protein, is widely regarded as a ubiquitous component of mature skeletal ...

Performance evaluation of a CD34 expression assay by digital PCR in bone marrow harvest from healthy donors

open access: yesTransfusion, EarlyView.
Abstract Background The aim of this study was to investigate a CD34 expression assay as an additional tool for the total nucleated cell (TNC) count assessment in bone marrow harvest (BMH) obtained from healthy donors. Study Design and Methods Samples obtained from bone marrow donors (n = 71) were analyzed for CD34 expression using a digital PCR assay ...
