Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Power Control of a Nonpitchable PMSG-Based Marine Current Turbine at Overrated Current Speed With Flux-Weakening Strategy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
This paper deals with power control strategies for a fixed-pitch direct drive marine current turbine (MCT) when the marine current velocity exceeds the rated value corresponding to the MCT nominal power.

Dynamic regulation of metabolic flux in engineered bacteria using a pathway-independent quorum-sensing circuit

open access: yesNature Biotechnology, 2017
Metabolic engineering of microorganisms to produce desirable products on an industrial scale can result in unbalanced cellular metabolic networks that reduce productivity and yield. Metabolic fluxes can be rebalanced using dynamic pathway regulation, but

Stirred cell ultrafiltration of lignin from black liquor generated from South African kraft mills

open access: yesSouth African Journal of Science, 2016
Ultrafiltration of lignin from black liquor was carried out in a stirred batch cell using polyethersulfone membranes. Parameters such as operating pressure, feed concentration, stirring rate and membrane cut-off size were varied and their effects on ...

Interpreting magnetic helicity flux in solar flux emergence [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Plasma Physics, 2019
Magnetic helicity flux gives information about the topology of a magnetic field passing through a boundary. In solar physics applications, this boundary is the photosphere and magnetic helicity flux has become an important quantity in analysing magnetic fields emerging into the solar atmosphere.

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Maximising flux in direct contact membrane distillation using nanofibre membranes

open access: yes, 2017
Electrospun PVDF nanofibre membranes were manufactured and tested on a direct-contact membrane distillation (DCMD) unit in an effort to maximise flux rate, which is generally low using standard MD membranes.

Modeling of milk ultrafiltration permeate flux under various operating conditions and physicochemical properties using Nero–Fuzzy method [PDF]

open access: yesPizhūhish va Nuāvarī dar ̒Ulūm va Sanāyi̒-i Ghaz̠āyī, 2014
In this study, an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) used for the prediction of permeate flux as a function of the physico-chemical and operating parameters during ultrafiltration of milk.
