Follicular development and its control

open access: yesGynecological Endocrinology, 1993
The female reproductive cycle is based on a co-ordinated function of several regulatory elements and signalling systems. Of the approximately 7 million oocytes present in the human fetal ovary, only 475 will eventually ovulate. In the human, the development of a primordial follicle into a dominant one takes about 10 weeks.

FOLLICULAR DEVELOPMENT IN THE INFANT HUMAN OVARY [PDF]

open access: yesReproduction, 1974
Summary. The morphology and growth pattern of human ovarian follicles has been studied between birth and 9 years of age. Follicles have been classified according to their morphology, diameter, the diameter of the oocyte and the number of granulosa cells in the widest cross-section. Nine major classes of follicle were recognized.

The Melatonin Treatment Improves the Ovarian Responses After Superstimulation in Thai-Holstein Crossbreeds Under Heat Stress Conditions

open access: yesFrontiers in Veterinary Science, 2022
The effect of heat stress with melatonin treatment on the superovulatory responses and embryo characteristics in Thai-Holstein crossbreeds under heat stress conditions was examined. Six non-lactating cows (replication = 4; n = 24) were assigned to one of

Transcriptome Analysis Reveals Differentially Expressed Genes and Long Non-coding RNAs Associated With Fecundity in Sheep Hypothalamus With Different FecB Genotypes

open access: yesFrontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology, 2021
Small-tailed Han sheep, with different FecB genotypes, manifest distinct ovulation rates and fecundities, which are due to differences in reproductive hormones secreted by the hypothalamic–pituitary–ovarian axis.

Deslorelin Slow-Release Implants Delay Ovulation and Increase Plasma AMH Concentration and Small Antral Follicles in Haflinger Mares

open access: yesAnimals, 2021
There is an increasing interest in the manipulation of ovarian follicular populations in large domestic animals because this could prove beneficial for assisted reproductive techniques such as ovum pick-up (OPU).

Observation of the dynamics of follicular development in the ovary [PDF]

open access: yesReproductive Medicine and Biology, 2016
AbstractThe number of ovulated oocytes is different among mammals but does not vary much within the same species. In order to sustain periodic ovulation, follicular development must be coordinated at the tissue level. Elucidating the regulatory mechanisms of follicular development is difficult because the ovary has a complicated structure and it takes ...

Autophagy in Ovarian Follicular Development and Atresia [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Biological Sciences, 2019
Autophagy is a mechanism that exists in all eukaryotes under a variety of physiological and pathological conditions. In the mammalian ovaries, less than 1% of follicles ovulate, whereas the remaining 99% undergo follicular atresia. Autophagy and apoptosis have been previously found to be involved in the regulation of both primordial follicular ...

Transcriptome analysis to unravel the gene expression profile of ovarian follicular development in Magang goose

open access: yesThe Journal of Reproduction and Development, 2020
Magang geese exhibit a unique characteristic of follicular development, with eight largest orderly arranged pre-ovulatory follicles in the abdominal cavity. However, little is known about the mechanisms underlying this follicular development.

Comparative analyses of laying performance and follicular development characteristics between fat and lean broiler lines

open access: yesPoultry Science
: The deposition of high levels of fat in broiler breeder hens can have a profound impact on follicular development and laying performance. This study was formulated with the goal of comparing egg production and follicular development characteristics at ...

Control of early ovarian follicular development [PDF]

open access: yesBioscientifica Proceedings, 2019
Early follicular growth refers to the development of an ovarian follicle from the primordial to early antral phase. In sheep and cows these phases of growth can be classified by the configuration of granulosal cells in the largest cross-section of the follicle as types 1 (primordial), 1a (transitory) 2 (primary), 3 and 4 (preantral) and 5 (early antral)
