Anticoagulation Therapy After the Fontan Procedure

Pediatric Cardiology, 2022
The optimum postoperative anticoagulation therapy type and duration after the Fontan procedure remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate whether our approach of administering only oral antiplatelets without warfarin due to serious bleeding complication risks in children is reasonable.

Fontan's procedure in two stages

The American Journal of Surgery, 1993
Since 1985, 381 patients with various cardiac malformations that share the central common feature of only one effective ventricle have been treated with some modification of Fontan's operation. Since 1989, the Fontan operation has been staged by associating the superior vena cava with the branch pulmonary arteries (hemi-Fontan) initially followed, some

The Extracardiac Fontan Procedure

Seminars in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery: Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Annual, 1998
The extracardiac modification of the Fontan procedure for complex single ventricle congenital cardiac disease is the latest attempt at improving on both the short-term and long-term results of this operation. This procedure differs from other modifications in that the inferior vena cava is detached from the heart and connected via a conduit to the ...

The Fontan Procedure in Adults

The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 1997
A retrospective clinical study was performed to document the course of adult patients undergoing the Fontan procedure.Between 1982 and 1994, 21 adults aged 18 to 40 years (mean age, 27 +/- 7 years) underwent a Fontan procedure. Anatomic diagnosis was tricuspid atresia in 9, double-inlet left ventricle in 4, and various single ventricles in 8.

Extracardiac conduit Fontan procedure versus intra-atrial lateral tunnel Fontan procedure

General Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, 2012
The Fontan procedure has provided excellent surgical palliation for patients with various types of univentricular hearts, and it has evolved over time. Among many modifications, the lateral tunnel Fontan connection (LTF) and the extracardiac Fontan connection (ECF) are currently the most popular techniques for completing the total cavopulmonary ...

Fontan Procedure - Indication and Clinical Results*,**

The Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeon, 1981
Twenty-six patients with tricuspid atresia (15), univentricular heart (7), and single ventricle (4) underwent 27 Fontan or modified Fontan procedures between 1975 and 1981. The age of the patients varied between 4 and 26 years. Twenty patients had had a total of 33 palliative operations prior to correction.

Pleural effusions following the Fontan procedure

Current Opinion in Pulmonary Medicine, 2010
The Fontan procedure is the final common pathway in the surgical palliation of many single ventricle heart defects. Mortality has improved but morbidity remains significant. Pleural effusions continue to present challenges after this operation and account for increased length of stay and increased time with draining tube thoracostomies.

Dysrhythmias after the modified Fontan procedure

Pediatric Cardiology, 1988
The cardiac rhythm before and after the modified Fontan procedure was reviewed in 24 patients. Transient atrial dysrhythmias were common in the immediate postoperative period. Late postoperative premature atrial contractions were detected by ambulatory monitoring in 20 of 23 patients; eight (34.8%) had supraventricular tachycardia.

Endocardial Pacing After Fontan‐Type Procedures

Pacing and Clinical Electrophysiology, 2005
Background: Sinus node dysfunction is a frequent complication of Fontan‐type procedure. Epicardial pacing is considered as the standard treatment for these patients. Methods and Results: We evaluated an endocardial approach in seven patients using a 4.1 French bipolar lumenless lead (SelectSecure) that is positioned through ...

Outcomes after the Fontan procedure

Current Opinion in Pediatrics, 2002
Over the past two decades, advances in congenital heart surgery, pediatric cardiology, and intensive care medicine have dramatically increased the survival of infants with critical congenital heart disease. The group of patients that has perhaps benefited the most from this progress has been the single-ventricle population.
