The Fontan procedure.

Heart & lung : the journal of critical care, 1985
The Fontan procedure has afforded improved surgical repair for several complex congenital cardiac defects, including tricuspid atresia and single ventricle. Through surgical creation of a connection between the RA and the RV or PA, adequate pulmonary perfusion can be achieved without an RV.

Hepatic Dysfunction Following the Fontan Procedure

Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, 2003
ABSTRACTObjectivesThe Fontan procedure offers a palliation for the hemodynamic derangements associated with congenital heart lesions characterized by a single functional ventricle, but it causes a chronically elevated systemic venous pressure that may result in hepatic congestion. The objective of this study was to characterize hepatic function and its

Classic Single Fontan Procedure

2018
The classic single Fontan refers to the operative procedure that establishes a total cavopulmonary connection immediately after the Stage I Norwood procedure. Historically, the single Fontan procedure has ever been the preferable method to treat left ventricular hypoplasia syndrome.

Porcine-valved Dacron Conduits in Fontan Procedures

The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 1988
From a series of 52 Fontan procedures between 1976 and 1984, the cases of the 27 consecutive patients who received a porcine-valved conduit were reviewed. There were 5 hospital deaths among these 27 patients. Follow-up ranges from 11 years 9 months to 3 years 9 months. At follow-up, no conduit-related complications could be demonstrated.

Late Outcome After the Fontan Procedure

Seminars in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery: Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Annual, 1998
Relatively little data exist on intermediate to late functional status and survival of patients after Fontan procedures. The first 500 patients undergoing a Fontan procedure at Children's Hospital (Boston, MA) were reviewed and then followed. There were 31 late failures among 410 patients contacted, and probability of survival at 10 years was 71.4 ...

Late deaths after Fontan procedure

Current Opinion in Cardiology, 2019
It has been more than 4 decades since the development of Fontan operation. With the contemporary surgical strategies to treat the patients with a single ventricle physiology, the medium-term survival of the patients following Fontan operation is excellent.

The fenestrated Fontan procedure.

Herz, 1992
In 90 patients with characteristics placing them at increased risk for a Fontan operation, a fenestration was created in the atrial baffle at the time of the Fontan repair. The rational was to allow a right to left shunt which would maintain cardiac output and limit right atrial pressure in the presence of conditions which limit pulmonary blood flow ...

Evolution of the Fontan-Kreutzer Procedure

Seminars in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery: Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Annual, 2010
The surgical techniques used to construct the Fontan-Kreutzer circulation have evolved considerably since the initial reports. In the early years, it was thought that a power source other than the main ventricular chamber was useful or even necessary to serve the pulmonary circulation.

Update on the modified Fontan procedure

Current Opinion in Cardiology, 1997
There have been multiple modifications for surgical palliation of functional single ventricle since the initial report by Fontan and Baudet in 1971. A modified Fontan procedure has been offered to patients with a variety of complex cyanotic heart disease at younger ages, and has resulted in decreased mortality.
