Evolutionarily divergent DUF4465 domains have a common vitamin B12‐binding function

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We show that DUF4465 family proteins, widespread across bacteria from gut microbiomes, hydrothermal vents, and soil, share a common vitamin B12‐binding function. These augmented β‐jellyroll proteins bind vitamin B12 via extended loops. Our findings establish sequence‐diverse DUF4465 proteins as a widespread class of B12‐binding proteins, highlighting ...

On the overconsumption of food portions : is the problem in the size or the number? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
While larger food portions lead to greater consumption, the effect appears to be greater when the larger food portions are created by increasing the size of food units than when created by increasing the number of food units making up the portion.

Molecular dynamics simulations of positively selected codons in FcγRI reveal novel biochemical binding properties

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Evolutionary analysis across 32 placental mammals identified positive selection at residues H148 and W149 in the immune receptor FcγR1. Ancestral reconstruction combined with molecular dynamics simulations reveals how these mutations may influence receptor structure and dynamics, providing insight into the evolution of antibody recognition and immune ...

Food System Education Among High School Students [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
As the American public school system is currently designed, the average student is likely to graduate high school without ever having received any formal instruction regarding the food system in which he or she takes part as a consumer.

Pharmacological inhibition of the PERK pathway modulates hepatocellular carcinoma growth and immune signaling

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Pharmacological inhibition of PERK in a DEN‐induced mouse model of liver cancer does not reduce tumor burden but alters cellular stress signaling. Despite blocking PERK activity, downstream stress responses, including CHOP expression, remain active, suggesting compensatory mechanisms within the unfolded protein response that may influence tumor ...

Governance for Local and Regional Food Systems

open access: yesJournal of Rural and Community Development, 2013
Local and regional food systems continue to emerge, despite daunting challenges. This article argues that such challenges can only be successfully confronted through the adoption of a more systematic approach and adequate governance.

Adherence to therapeutic gastroscopy guidelines for acute esophageal food bolus impaction: Impact on adverse outcomes and length of stay

open access: yesJGH Open
Background and Aim According to the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE), gastroscopy should be conducted within 6 h for complete obstruction and 24 h for incomplete obstruction due to food bolus impaction.

Early‐life high‐fat diet exposure increases Achilles tendon stiffness and induces transcriptomic alterations

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Early‐life exposure to a high‐fat diet altered intact Achilles tendons in rat offspring, making them thinner, stiffer, and molecularly distinct even without injury. These findings suggest that developmental high‐fat diet exposure may impair tendon quality and increase susceptibility to mechanical overload or tendon injury later in life.
