Food restriction and membrane fluidity

Mechanisms of Ageing and Development, 1992
The fluidity of the erythrocyte membrane derived from growing rats raised under restricted food intake was found to be higher than the fluidity of the respective membranes from ad libitum fed animals. Considering the apparent relationship between the decrease in membrane fluidity and aging, the results point to the possible beneficial effects of food ...

Food restriction, evolution and ageing

Mechanisms of Ageing and Development, 2005
The food restriction model for life extension is nearing "three-score and 10" years of age and remains in good shape, preserving much of the mystique of its youth. Although originally described for laboratory rodents, recent work shows that food restriction also appears to slow ageing processes in a range of other animal species, raising the question ...

Exercise and Food Restriction in Rats ,

The Journal of Nutrition, 1992
A number of studies have shown that exercised rats live longer than sedentary freely eating controls. There is disagreement regarding whether exercise results in extension of maximal life span. However, in two studies of the effect of voluntary wheel running on longevity of male specific-pathogen-free Long-Evans rats it was found that, although the ...

Psychological Consequences of Food Restriction

Journal of the American Dietetic Association, 1996
A review of the literature and research on food restriction indicates that inhibiting food intake has consequences that may not have been anticipated by those attempting such restriction. Starvation and self-imposed dieting appear to result in eating binges once food is available and in psychological manifestations such as preoccupation with food and ...

Metabolic consequences of food restriction in rats☆

Physiology & Behavior, 1981
Abstract Some aspects of carbohydrate metabolism were studied in rats subjected to food restriction (single daily meal offered during two hours, either diurnal or nocturnal) for a week. Nocturnal preference for the nocturnal meal was patent in spite of food restriction, inasmuch as the rats fed from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. ingested significantly more than

Food and Water Restriction in the Wrestler

JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1979
The present practice in wrestling of "making weight" is hazardous to the health of growing young men, primarily because competitors lose too high a percentage of body fat. The Tcheng-Tipton-Clarke method should be used to control food restriction, while observation of specific gravity of urine should be used to control fluid restriction and hydration.

Food restriction and lipid metabolism in pregnancy

Metabolism, 1964
Abstract In order to study the effects of reduced food intake during pregnancy on tissue and serum lipids, a paired feeding experiment was carried out on pregnant rats in which deprived rats were given 30 per cent of the daily intake of their freely eating controls. When they were sacrificed at term, the deprived rats contained 6 to 8 live young. Dry

Cold acclimation in food-restricted rats

Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part A: Physiology, 1987
Food intake, body weight and brown adipose tissue (BAT) mass and composition of rats exposed at 6 degrees C either with food ad libitum or food-restricted were compared with those of rats in the thermoneutral zone, with food ad libitum. Cold acclimation with food ad libitum increases food intake and prevents body weight gains.

Global Food Restriction

2009
The use of restricted feeding paradigms to understand mechanisms of aging in rodent models is discussed. The phrase global food restriction is defined so as to avoid ambiguities that have arisen with the use of the phrase dietary restriction. Evidence is evaluated regarding the claim that such procedures not only extend longevity but also retard aging ...

Anti-lipoperoxidation action of food restriction

Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1987
Chronic food restriction inhibited the age-related increase of malondialdehyde production and lipid hydroperoxides in liver mitochondrial and microsomal membranes of ad libitum fed Fischer 344 rats. The anti-lipoperoxidation action of food restriction could not be attributable to the changes in membrane lipid content nor vitamin E status.
