Spatial distributions of trophic interactions define the spatial heterogeneity of food webs and differences between local and macroecological food webs. The concept of co-occurrence has to be given up when larger spatial scales are considered that integrate different local community food webs into a metacommunity food web.

Food webs in food webs: the micro–macro interplay of multilayered networks
Trends in Ecology & EvolutionFood webs are typically defined as being macro-organism-based (e.g., plants, mammals, birds) or microbial (e.g., bacteria, fungi, viruses). However, these characterizations have limits. We propose a multilayered food web conceptual model where microbial food webs are nested within food webs composed of macro-organisms.

Food Webs for Parasitologists: A Review
Journal of Parasitology, 2010This review examines the historical origins of food web theory and explores the reasons why parasites have traditionally been left out of food web studies. Current paradigms may still be an impediment because, despite several attempts, it remains virtually impossible to retrofit parasites into food web theory in any satisfactory manner.

In order to explore the extent to which interactions between pairs of species embedded in complex multispecies food webs are nonlocalized, in terms of the number of other species that need to be taken into account, the influence of other species in the system on the response of the hake fishery to a cull of fur seals is calculated in a 29-species food ...

Is biodiversity maintained by food-web complexity?—the adaptive food-web hypothesis
2005Abstract How do diverse species coexist in the complex networks of prey-predator interactions in nature? While most theoretical models predict that complex food webs do not persist, recent empirical studies have revealed the very complex structure of natural food webs.
