Food Chains and Food Webs in Aquatic Ecosystems

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2020
Food chains and food webs describe the structure of communities and their energy flows, and they present interactions between species. Recently, diverse methods have been developed for both experimental studies and theoretical/computational studies on ...

Foundation species enhance food web complexity through non-trophic facilitation. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2018
Food webs are an integral part of every ecosystem on the planet, yet understanding the mechanisms shaping these complex networks remains a major challenge.

On the interplay of speciation and dispersal: An evolutionary food web model in space [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We introduce an evolutionary metacommunity of multitrophic food webs on several habitats coupled by migration. In contrast to previous studies that focus either on evolutionary or on spatial aspects, we include both and investigate the interplay between ...

Ecology: Engineered food webs [PDF]

open access: yesCurrent Biology, 1996
An important new study shows that, in a food web, the strengths and arrangement of the interactions between species are determining factors of stability of the system.

Critical review: Grand challenges in assessing the adverse effects of contaminants of emerging concern on aquatic food webs

open access: yesEnvironmental Toxicology and Chemistry, 2018
Much progress has been made in the past few decades in understanding the sources, transport, fate, and biological effects of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in aquatic ecosystems.

Food Webs: Experts Consuming Families of Experts

open access: yes, 2005
The question what determines the structure of natural food webs has been listed among the nine most important unanswered questions in ecology. It arises naturally from many problems related to ecosystem stability and resilience.

Dispersal Dynamics in Food Webs [PDF]

open access: yesThe American Naturalist, 2015
Studies of food webs suggest that limited nonrandom dispersal can play an important role in structuring food webs. It is not clear, however, whether density-dependent dispersal fits empirical patterns of food webs better than density-independent dispersal.

PARP inhibitors elicit distinct transcriptional programs in homologous recombination competent castration‐resistant prostate cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
PARP inhibitors are used to treat a small subset of prostate cancer patients. These studies reveal that PARP1 activity and expression are different between European American and African American prostate cancer tissue samples. Additionally, different PARP inhibitors cause unique and overlapping transcriptional changes, notably, p53 pathway upregulation.

Commonality in structure among food web networks [PDF]

open access: yesNetwork Biology, 2015
A goal of this study was to determine similarities in structure among food webs that are otherwise disparate with regard to species, population, and size.

The architecture of predator-prey and the relationship between complexity and stability [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Theoretical studies predict that the stability of an ecosystem is negatively correlated with its complexity, measured by the number of interacting species. On the other hand, empirical evidence indicates that food webs are highly interconnected.
