A Discussion on the Effective Ventilation Distance in Dead-End Tunnels
Forcing ventilation is the most widely used system to remove noxious gases from a working face during tunnel construction. This system creates a region near the face (dead zone), in which ventilation takes place by natural diffusion, rather than being ...

Virtual mode in a discipline in the Medicine career in times of pandemic: students’ perception
COVID-19 has broken into the lives of the world’s citizens, forcing to quarantine. Higher Education was no stranger to this phenomenon. The face-to-face became virtual. Students’ vision is important in this setting.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Plasma membranes contain dynamic nanoscale domains that organize lipids and receptors. Because viruses operate at similar scales, this architecture shapes early infection steps, including attachment, receptor engagement, and entry. Using influenza A virus and HIV‐1 as examples, we highlight how receptor nanoclusters, multivalent glycan interactions ...

pH‐mediated activation of the lysosomal arginine sensor SLC38A9
Cells monitor nutrient levels via the lysosomal transporter SLC38A9 to activate the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1). This study reveals that SLC38A9 function is regulated by pH. We identified histidine 544 as a critical pH sensor that undergoes conformational changes to control amino acid efflux from lysosomes; therefore, it ...

Plant photosynthesis and productivity on Earth in the high Carbon Dioxide 21st century [PDF]
Understanding how plant productivity responds to CO2 is crucial to understanding Earth System dynamics and therefore, predicting the Earth System’s response to anthropogenic forcing of atmospheric CO2.
