How Similar Are Forest Disturbance Maps Derived from Different Landsat Time Series Algorithms?

open access: yesForests, 2017
Disturbance is a critical ecological process in forested systems, and disturbance maps are important for understanding forest dynamics. Landsat data are a key remote sensing dataset for monitoring forest disturbance and there recently has been major ...

Disturbance alters the forest soil microbiome

Molecular Ecology, 2021
AbstractBillions of microorganisms perform critical below‐ground functions in all terrestrial ecosystems. While largely invisible to the naked eye, they support all higher lifeforms, form symbiotic relationships with ~90% of terrestrial plant species, stabilize soils, and facilitate biogeochemical cycles.

Direct and indirect disturbance impacts in forests

Ecology Letters, 2021
Abstract Human and natural disturbances are key drivers of change in forest ecosystems. Yet, the direct and indirect mechanisms which underpin these changes remain poorly understood at the ecosystem level. Here, using structural equation modelling across a 150+ year chronosequence, we disentangle the direct and indirect effects of ...

Drought as a Disturbance in Forests

2017
Drought is a situation of water deficit of a system, compared to normal conditions. Operational definitions of drought (i.e., those used to identify specific drought events) change depending upon the system under consideration, but they have been historically restricted to climatic, agricultural, hydrologic, and socioeconomic systems.

Detecting anthropogenic disturbance in tropical forests

Trends in Ecology & Evolution, 2006
Tropical forests are beleaguered by an array of threats driven by different scales of anthropogenic perturbations, which vary in the degree to which they can be detected by remote sensing. The extent of different patterns of cryptic disturbance often far exceeds the total area deforested, as shown by two recent studies on selective logging in Amazonia.

Disturbance impacts on forest temporal dynamics

Water, Air, & Soil Pollution, 1995
Contagious disturbances are widespread and an important component of the life-cycle of the Canadian boreal forest. Models which simulate the dynamics of these forests must include a representation of disturbance influences. Spatial models differ from non-spatial models in the use of area-based rather than point-based sampling designs.

FORESTS, DISTURBANCES, AND INSECTS

The Canadian Entomologist, 1980
AbstractRecent developments in ecological theory pertaining to the coexistence of insect species in response to forest disturbance are reviewed, and the findings are applied to the requirements for the Biological Survey of the Insects of Canada. It is important that a data collection system have a sound theoretical base, otherwise it will probably be ...

Effects of forest gap disturbance on forest ecosystem.

Ying yong sheng tai xue bao = The journal of applied ecology, 2021
Forest gap disturbance has important consequences on plant species assemblage, stand structure and ecosystem functions of forests via changing micro-scale heterogeneity and community succession. Here, we reviwed research progress in the effects of forest gap disturbance on forest ecosystem.

An Introduction to the Economics of Forest Disturbance

2008
Increasing severity of recent wildfires, storms, pest outbreaks, and biological invasions has intensified concern among governmental agencies, private enterprises, and the general public regarding the future of forest resources. Economic analysis can help decision-makers understand the causes and consequences of forest disturbances, as well as evaluate
